You are right coffeepot, Payson is cooler than the valley, I need to aircondition my shop.

My shop is perfectly air conditioned...I work outside in a shaded spot. When the wind blows I have perfect AC...of course it is much nicer when it isnt 108 out.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Spiral Blades are Awesome!
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:05:54 pm »
I got off work early today. Took my inexpensive (some would say cheap) scroll saw to Harbor Freight (yes, I actually own a HF Scroll Saw) and had 3 of their clerks help me to figure out how to use my saw blade converters so that I can use non pin blades. After about 15 to 20 minutes of puzzling over this, one of them (hopefully the better paid one) figured out how to use the adapters. My next stop was to Lowes where I bought my first pack of non pin blades. Got a dozen spiral blades. Well...havent made anything with them yet other than some very fun cuts. Compared to what I have been doing this spiral blade is awesome. I can now start looking for more detailed patters. I think I will quit my day job and just spend my time making things! (Wife said, "No" to that last comment.   ::) ) Well time to start looking for something new to make!

ok...see that is what I love about this site. So much good advice and so easy to learn new things. Thanks Mainwoods for the list of things to do. I am working on my smooth cutting skills...but until I get a bit better I will try some of these other things. I might get one small pack of the sanding blades just so I have an idea. If I do I will post my review. Thanks again all for the super advice. This hobby would be less fun if it were not for this site.

Intarsia / Re: Lighthouse Step 2

I give you a lot of credit for jumping in with both feet, making this particular pattern your first attempt at taking on an Intarsia project.
I hope it turns out a success, showing that it not as hard as everyone thinks and maybe it will inspire more people to their hand try it,
I've never used a spray adhesive so I can't offer any advice in it's use, but I've never found Zebra wood to be oily. Scotch tape sticks to it with no problem.

What you have done, so far, is looking good, keep us updated.

 ;D I hope you are right. I know it is a big project, but I figure all it will cost if I fail is time and some money. The time is fun and a learning experience. The money....well all I can say about that is I hope I have more successes than failures. My mother in law loves lighthouses so I drew this one up and thought I'd jump in and see what happens. So far I am pretty happy with what I have done.

Good suggestion for using packing tape. I sprayed the heck out of the pattern...and it didnt stick at all. Well the packing tape will solve it...and make blades last longer ..woot!  :D

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Adhering Patterns
« on: June 14, 2012, 11:41:14 pm »
Well so far I have tried 2 methoods. I bought some printer paper at Staples. It has adhesive backing. It worked pretty good...but was a bit hard to get off the wood. So I moved on to using spray adhesive. I got some at Walmart. It works well for me. If I have trouble removing it I use my wife's hair dryer and heat it up some.

Now today I had a new problem with adhesives. I used some on zebra wood and for some reason it didnt stick well. Has anyone else had that problem?

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Scroll Saw Sanding

I just followed a link from another post (clocks) and while surfing that website I ended up on this page http://www.sloanswoodshop.com/scroll_sanders.htm  It is a sander that goes where your blade goes. This is the perfect solution to sanding some of them hard to reach spots on any project. I know many of you pros might have known this...but for a noob like me this was a fantastic find!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Do you ever....

It is a real pleasure when out and about to NOT be driving! I often see piles of things being discarded and if time permits we will stop for a few minutes while I search for ANYTHING that might be useful in projects.
Discarded furniture sitting at the curb for pickup is a tremendous magnet! As are piles of pallets!

~~~GB~~~
I can relate to this. One advantage of my job is I cover a large area of neighborhoods every day. When there is bulk trash pick up I can scan for any broken furniture pieces which might have a nice piece of wood. Glad to know I am not the only one doing this.
Intarsia / Lighthouse finally finished
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:57:50 pm »
This project has taken some time. I drew the pattern myself using a simple program paint. Then selected all my woods (thanks to the help of many of you for great advice). After some cutting and sometimes re-cutting I managed to get the pieces fitting pretty close. Finally all glued and sanded. All I need now is to put the backing on and a wire to hang it. This is my first attempt at intarsia. Looking forward to my next project (probably something a bit simpler in size and design. Thanks again to all my friends here who helped me figure this out.
Stretched leather look is perfect. I had to look close to realize it wasnt leather. If you came up with this project design on your own then super good job....if you found the pattern somewhere, still an excellent job. Very unique. Thanks for sharing.
All I can think of to say is Oh My Goodness! That is an awesome gift, one to be treasured all his life. You did a fantastic job. It looks like something you would order on line made by a machine. That date is so pristine and perfect. This is truly such a nice project. What kind of wood did you use? Also what size and type of blade did you use. Good work and you truly should be proud. Thanks for sharing.
Ok, to put an end to this story of mine...I have learned a lot about things I can do to eliminate the problem...thanks to all for help. Also, much to my embarrassment, I found out not only does my saw have the ability for an adapter to use pinless blades....it actually came with one. I found the adapters in a small bag in the bottom of the box (Thank God I kept the box in storage room). So, now I just need to figure how to put adapter on the saw and I will be able to use better blades. Thanks again for the help from all you pros.
