Brag Forum / Picture Ornaments
« on: December 21, 2013, 05:38:59 pm »

These are mods of Steve Good's "Five Simple Christmas Ornaments" pattern. They are expanded in size a little (about 6" long), and a 27mm picture frame has been added. The youngest girl's name - Charlotte - was too many letters to fit on a normally sized ornament, so the pictures do the trick and save a lot of elbow grease.

BTW - They are hanging from the cornice of an 1890s mechanical music box that was passed down from my mother's father. We have 36 zinc disks for it; each disk is 20" in diameter.

Brag Forum / Baptism portrait
« on: December 19, 2013, 03:32:04 pm »
This is a grand nephew of a friend. Weather kept her from travelling to his baptism last weekend so she commissioned a portrait.

The portrait is 1/4" BB Ply; frame is 1" cherry with black walnut splines in the corners. Portrait and frame were finished with Bulls Eye shellac then paste wax rubbed in with 0000 steel wool. They look good and feel like satin.

Brag Forum / Steve's Madonna as an ornament
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:18:28 pm »
This is a reduction of Steve's Madonna and Child portrait as a Christmas tree ornament. It is 3"x5", cut in 1/4" red oak.

I received ornaments from Paul (FAB4), Clyde, and Marcel. Thank you all - they are excellent and will have a prominent place on my Christmas tree.

Brag Forum / AA

Thanks to Steve for the AA tree ornament pattern. Our family has been involved with AA for decades. AA has converted misery to great success for several close relative/friends.

This ornament is for a relative with 31 sober years - congratulations Joe. 3/8 thick Padauk, 3" diameter, with a stitched leather sheath to store it off-season.

Brag Forum / New frame idea?
« on: November 16, 2013, 12:41:48 pm »
This frame is very simple to make - 2 rectangles of 1/4" BB Ply glued together to form the ledge for the picture.

This picture is 5x7. The back shot shows the rectangle cut from the back used to close the hole. The glass is cut from a 12"x36" piece of single strength window glass ($6.90 at Lowes). Back piece is 6x8 with 5x7 interior cut. Front piece is 5.5x7.5 with 4.5x6.5 interior cut. The back has red mahogany stain for mount on a light colored wall. Both are spray lacquered. If you will be mounting on a dark colored wall, swap the colors to leave a light outline.

Still thinking about the hang or stand method.

Brag Forum / Birthday
« on: November 10, 2013, 09:38:27 am »
My Beautiful Bride turned 60 today. Our house is covered in scroll saw cuttings so I wanted to try something different for a gift. This is based on Steve's Gumball pattern with a few changes. Made from 1" thick maple. If you watch Steve's video you'll see it's a little hard to catch the gumball on the way out, so I extended the base forward and added a ridge around the edge to help hold the dropping gumball. I used a 1 quart Ball Jar. The drop hole is 1" diameter, so (2) 1/2" gumballs drop each time. I plan to try M&Ms - I'd guess 5 or 6 will fall through at a time. This would be nice for an office desk for holiday candy (throttle the candy hogs a bit).

Star Trek's Saw Bones. 6"x8" in 1/4" BB Ply with a black foam backer. I like the foam backer - very black, 2 mm thick, easy to cut, lots of other colors available from Hobby Lobby. $0.89 for 12"x18" 2 mm thick.

This was cut in a 2-deep stack with a #3 Crown Tooth blade. It is a slow cutter but was very good at making the sharp angles in the face. Easy to swing the blank through a 180? turn to cut both sides of a thin line.

Brag Forum / "Things" Box
« on: October 24, 2013, 12:09:06 pm »
This box is a gift for a young priest visiting our parish. 6"x7" with 1" radius outside corners. The double-ring box is cut from 1" birch with a 20? taper on the inside (easier to get the M&Ms out). Surfaces are doubled-up 1/8" BB Ply -outer surface on each side is a portrait, with 1/8" BB Ply backer inside the side rings.

The front is the emblem for the order - Fathers of Mercy. Back is St. Bernadette (Bernadette of Lourdes) as a teenager.

The thickness of the box (1 3/8" front to back) allows it to stand on end on a desk, so it can hold a bunch of desk crap without consuming much desktop space, and can be turned to show either the front or back portrait.

Any comments are welcome.

This is a recent Steve Good pattern. 8"x10", 1/4" BB Ply with a black card stock backer. Cut with a #1 spiral. Note the veining (cracks) in the lettering - the spiral worked well for that detail and for the Reaper's robe edges.

We've been playing with Star Trek portraits the last few days. Here's the next installment: Dr. Leonard McCoy (Bones). This is a Threshold Rendering to match earlier Spock and Kirk portraits.

Brag Forum / What, me worry?
« on: October 06, 2013, 04:15:20 pm »
A blast from the past.
This pattern is rendered from a posting on Deviant Art. It was a stencil from a paper cutting.
5"x7", 1/4" BB Ply, black cardstock backing. The face was cut with an FDUR#1. The text was cut with a #1 spiral - I was hoping it would look jittery, like Alfred might actually be a little worried.

Brag Forum / St. Bernadette
« on: October 03, 2013, 05:03:14 pm »

These are for the Silent Auction at our parish - St. Bernadette, Lancaster Ohio. You've seen the woodworkers before. The portrait on the right is a young Bernadette Soubirous, or St. Bernadette of Lourdes - pattern below.

Both are 5"x7" cut from 1/4" BB Ply. Bases are 1"x3" black walnut.
