Brag Forum / Couple items
« on: January 31, 2013, 05:51:04 pm »
Finished these this week. The wine barrel patten is by Nico.
The other two items are part of a church pulpit my nephew is building. He asked for my help with some scrollwork. The large piece is the "bookstand" part with the church logo/design. The bottom piece will go on the front "towards the congregation". The piece was 24" long and my Crafstman 16" couldn't make the turns, so I had to do the lettering with.......spirals.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Cutting thin plywood
« on: January 25, 2013, 03:26:37 pm »
I have a smallish cheapo Craftsman table saw and need some insight on what kind of blades and technique to use for cutting 1/8" plywood. I have something called a plywood blade but it just shreds the edges. I'm looking to make a stock of 8" x 10" blanks, ready to scroll.

Thanks, Pete

Pattern Requests. / Laurel & Hardy "Flying Deuces"

Been Goofing around with pattern making, by reading posts and asking questions of folks on this forum. Watching the work of Mahendra and Don R has inspired me. I used a combination of Gimp and Inkscape. How'd I do?

Pattern Requests. / Request pattern help
« on: December 21, 2012, 11:19:49 am »
I have tried but failed in photoshop & Gimp. I can do the desaturate & filters, but when it comes to any artwork i'm useless... My niece and nephew had to put down their pet of 14 years and they have asked if I could do something for the front of the box where they keep her ashes. The front face of the box is 5" high x 11.25 wide. I know it's a verticle picture in a horizontal space, but that's the picture they want.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It does not have to be done by Christmas... Thank goodness.
Thanks, Pete

Brag Forum / Santa

Here's my take on Sheila Landry's self framing Santa, got the idea for the green stain from Keefie. Thanks!
Did the perimeter cut with regular blades, 99% of the rest was done with spirals.

General Scroll Saw Talk / I broke it!
« on: November 16, 2012, 07:38:11 pm »
I was in the middle of a compound cut in 1-1/2" poplar for a Christmas ornament,BANG. Busted the linkage rod of my Craftsman 16" ( model 137.216010). I ordered new parts from Sears but, I don't know how to access the bottom of the rod, which is where it broke off. I took the back plastic plate off and found a bunch of wires and junk. Any body changed one of these things before and can steer me in the right direction for disassembly? I'm afraid if I just start taking every thing off I will have wasted much effort.
Not a good time to be without my saw!!
Thanks for any insight, Pete.

Brag Forum / For The Veterans
« on: November 09, 2012, 05:07:52 pm »
I made these little tokens of my appreciation for the Veterans I work with. This Sunday is Veterans Day in the United States. I will offer these for free on Monday.
I would also like to take a moment to thank and honor all of you folks who have served in our nations military services as well.
They are made from oak and are about 6" long. Used Steves Stencil Printer for the lettering.

Walnut top & bottom, oak in the middle. Pattern is loosely based on one in SS W & C "BOXES AND BOWLS" book. About 6" X 4". Finished with 3 coats of Salad Bowl Finish (food safe). It is a small gift for my sister in law, who hosts the Thanksgiving dinner for 16-18 people every year.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Spray Fumes
« on: October 19, 2012, 03:03:25 pm »
I have a question about fumes. My work area is in my basement, so when I spray adhesive, lacquer, shellac or whatever, what I do is spray quick and run upstairs, to return when the smell goes away. I do have a little spray box set up with a fan (see picture) which works pretty good at removing the overspray and particles in the air. But it does not remove the fumes. You may think I should go outside to spray, but here in Minnesota it?s below freezing and snowing out there half of the year (seems like). I use the spray adhesive for pattern application, and the spray finishes are so much easier than trying to brush something on. Any help with alternate products or any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks, Pete

« on: October 11, 2012, 07:23:38 pm »
Made these for a friend, they go in the upper corners of windows to hide the window covering brackets. The scrolled pieces are ?? oak with a 49 inch single cut (I measured it with a string). About a half hour and a new blade (FDUR5) for each.

Introduce Yourself. / Hello from Minnesota
« on: October 05, 2012, 06:14:59 pm »
Hello all, I?m Pete (another one) from Minnesota USA. I?ve been scrolling for a couple years, mostly ornaments and portraits for family and friends. I have been checking in on this forum for about a year, and thought it was probably time to introduce myself. Most of the things I have learned, I learned right here. Tilt the machine, zero clearance, aquarium pump, proper tensioning, dust collection, BLO, FDUR, and all the other tips and tricks you guys have shared. Thank you Steve for this forum, and for sharing your videos and wonderful patterns, and Russ for maintaining order here. Thanks to the rest of you for your humor and compassion towards one another.
Pete
