We have had 49 new members join the forum so far this month. I see that several of you have posted already and are off to a good start. If this is your first experience using an online forum don't hesitate to ask for help. No question is silly, well maybe a few are silly but who cares we are all friends here.
Jump in and try things out. You won't break anything unless you hit the "Any" key which will wipe out the database and collapse the internet. Don't worry though because I have the internet backed up on my local hard drive.
There are not many rules here except to watch out for GrayBeard. He's a little scary but the doctors allow him out two days a week now.
Russ is my hugely under paid moderator here. He keeps watch over things and relentlessly bans the spammers(bad guys) to keep them from spoiling the family fun. He accepts tips preferably in small denomination unmarked bills.
There are craftsmen and women here from all levels of the craft. When you see the beautiful cuttings by Mrsn, Cherie, Merlin and others or the incredible intarsia by Intarsia92 don't be intimidated. They started just like you. Except for Intarsia92 who came out of the womb making beautiful intarsia. We also have some great pattern designers here like grandpa who helps more scrollers than Tylenol. Sheila Landry who is one of the top five pattern designers in the world today and yes I'm jealous. We even have a few readers that don't even have a scroll saw yet. They just enjoy learning while they wait to buy a saw. A couple of them are here looking to pick up women but I happen to know they are broke so don't waste your time ladies.
Glad to have all of you with us here and I hope you enjoy the forum and make a few new friends while you are at it. If you have friends that you think would enjoy the hobby send them our way and we will do our best to get them addicted to saw dust just like us.

Whew Steve, I thought you might be talking about me in the bottom of the next to last paragraph. But after reading it again, it's those without saws and money. I'm just without money! Plus, my wife would take my saw away if I picked up another lady. Even if she came with a saw! ;D
But I agree with a big welcome to all the newcomers! Let the saw dust fly and ask any question. If you have answers that's a plus too!

TO: ALL NEW MEMBERS
Being very serious (darn hard for me too!)...
THREE years ago I didn't have any ideas of using a scroll saw beyond cutting out 'acorn' shapes for some bird feeders I was making.
In that short span of time I have bought two saws, the last one a DeWalt 788, and have launched the most satisfying hobby I have had since I discovered girls!
Every one of us starts with little or limited knowledge of what these machines are capable of and how to make them work.
YOU, New Members, are the lucky ones! We have been through it all and can help you over the bumps and ruts in the "Scroll Saw Road"!
AND... we are here to HELP you, encourage you, explain things for you and in general make your scrolling life so much easier and more enjoyable.
What started out about 10 months ago as an informative offshoot of Steve's Blog has turned into the repository of virtually ALL information available about this gratifying hobby!
WE have become an extended Family and group of Friends. That does not mean we all agree on everything as you would expect in any family! But we treat each other with RESPECT because each one of us knows that no ONE of us has all the knowledge. We are always friendly, helpful and ready and willing to tell of our experiences so others may benefit.
There is kidding, teasing, cajoling and good natured fun. There has even been known to be help above and beyond scrolling!
So I personally invite each and every one of you to PARTICIPATE and join our FAMILY!
I Welcome you and so does every other member of this group.
Now, If someone will call the 'home' and let them know I am ready to return......

Again, welcome to all you new members. We are so truly glad to have you. The vast majority of us are self taught, which simply means we have made every mistake known to man! Please don't be afraid to ask the questions. We've all been there and done that! We are eager and happy to share what we know and are excited to see what you are up to.
For me, I was a single mom with two kids in college. I needed extra income and this is how I got it. Since, I have been able to make a fairly decent living with my scrollwork and finally gave up my job to do this full time. I am still amazed that I get paid for doing something I love so much.
I had NEVER talked to strangers on the internet until this forum. There are no strangers on this forum. These folks are friends and family and I am blessed to have them in my life.

Ok my turn.... To all new members to this forum I was just like you once, I was looking for info so I did a search on google for scroll sawsand sawing and Up popped alot of searchs but the one that caught my eye was Steves blog so I went and had a look, while there I noticed he had some videos on you tube so I had a look well that is all it took for me I was hooked to his Blog.
One day as I was looking through all of Steves patterns and reading his stories I seen he had a forum so I came here sat back for awhile and read posts then one day I said I am going to join this forum so I did and now I couldn't be more pleased with this forum, I WAS a member of other ones until I joined this one because this forum is (as my wife puts it) not as steril as the other forums we have a friendship (family type) here that the others just don't have. As for GB he is a little hard to get a read on at first but give him time you will learn he is just a big old rough Teddy Bear with a heart to match (sorry GB I had to) as for the rest of us once you get to know us (much like I had to learn) Were a down right Great bunch of people who look out for each other and thanks to Steve and Russ who look out for the forum as a whole.
I wouldn't want to go anywhere else and I belive once you come on in and sit a spell at our Scroll Saw (forum) you will feel the same way we all did when we got started here.
So if have any questions feel free to ask there are no stupid questions.
Join up and enjoy your stay we welcome each and everyone of you with open Hearts, minds and arms. I hope to see you around the Forum.

I found this ;D"GROUP-O-GOOFIES" ;) doing a search for a letter opener pattern. Now that I think on it, I don't believe I ever actually did the letter opener pattern I found here.
This is the best bunch of scrollsawing friends you can find. I think GB and I should start a feud just to add some contrast to all the niceness that is here. Nah...I like him too much.

We have members from all over the world here on the forum and scroll sawing has broke the boundaries of race, color, ethnicity, gender, language and more. I believe it is also because of Steve's passion for scrolling and the enjoyment of helping others in the art of scrolling. The forum seems to emanate Steve's own personality. ( Personally I think Steve is a little crazy and needs to be in the home not GB. I mean come on, think about it. Who in his right mind would give all the patterns he makes for free. "Shhhhh don't tell him I said so".) ::) ::) ::)
Don't be more nervous than a long-tailed dog in a room full of rocking chairs, feel free to browse thought the category's and post, post, post. ;)
Just remember, before you can get to be the best, you have to start as the worst. We all where beginners at one time, some just don't like to admit it (and think they know it all). So we are willing to help, if you need it. :)

By golly old sober sides Steve really DOES have a sense of humor, just because it's his show though he's not going to steal the thunder from GB and me. We've got a couple of new whippersnappers trying to stir things up too warning everyone to be on the lookout for guys like Gray Beard and me, keep an eye on Iggy he's a rabble rouser and wsmith draws terrible pictures of UGLY WOMEN totaly shameless. i am retired and i decided to do something i have never done before in my retirement for a hobby only. woodworking. i have done some simple scrollsaw work and i love it. i have a delta variable speed scrollsaw. i was doing a sign with small printing on it. i almost had it finished and it cut a letter off. i was not able to stay in my shop. tooo much blue smoke. if you know what i mean. my guestion is---with tight curves and small letters, should i have run the saw at a slower spped or is full speed okay. i really don't know as i am new at this. i really would like advice from someone who knows. i don't know anyone who uses a scrollsaw. Welcome to the forum Shadowsibe. First question, what size blade are you using and what kind of wood and thickness are you using? Unless I'm cutting very thick and very hard wood, I never run my saw at full speed.
Please if you can, repost this question over in the general scroll saw forum where more folks can see and respond to your question.

Like Shadowsibe I have just retired and thought I would try scrollsawing.
I have been in the woodwork trade for 50years and used to do fretsawing
when I was a young lad but have done none since.I bought a Hegner Multicut 2
from e-bay for ?50,it must be an old one because it's single speed and the
Multicut 2 on Hegners' site is variable but i'm not complaining just having
great fun.

Hi everyone! My name is Ken and I am from the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Brand new member here...just checking in and introducing myself. As of today, I am the proud owner of a brand new PC 16" scroll saw (the one found at Loews). I finally replaced my 15 year old Craftsman with this one. I have done a few projects but still rank myself as a learning amateur! Hi Steve.
This is my first posting, done mainly by guesswork, being a total techno-phobe. I retired from work at the end of May and am already bored rigid.... I found my old Delta scroll saw out and re-instated it into my workshop and am enjoying working with wood again. I live in the UK and my main problem is finding hard/softwoods at a thickness less than 20mm. Is there anyone out there who can point me in the direction of a UK timber merchant that suppliers a variety of woods in different thinner thicknesses. Until then, I'll continue using Plywood and MDF and paint my projects!!

Hello, I'm Vitali. Originally I'm from Russia. Nine years I was living in Israel. Last two years I live in Vancouver, BC. First time I took in hands the fretsaw (as on my picture) in elementary school. Since that time this is my favorite hobby. Recently I bought my first scroll saw, DW 788 and...... I'm a little upset because it is not ease "to follow the line". I wish my technic and quality of projects will be the same as it was with a hand-held saw. However, I don't give up and continue to practice ( when I have free time :)). There is some improvement, but results still leave much to be desire :(
Anyway, I'm glad "join to the club".

Hi guys! My name is Terry and I'm new to all of this. I bought a used Craftsman 16" variable speed scroll saw recently, some blades, a sheet of birch plywood and, with some patterns from Steve's collection, started working on some projects. My cuts look pretty rough right now. Still learning how to pivot my piece correctly (just watched Steve's video on curved cuts so maybe I'll get better soon!) and this particular saw is difficult to connect/reconnect the blade when switching from inside cuts. Excited to see what I can do with some practice, though. Glad there's a place like this to draw from the experience of people who actually know what they're doing!

Okay, let me fill in the blanks so you guys have a better idea about me and how I can best get started. I live in Tennessee. I just bought a used Craftsman 16" variable speed saw that came with some spiral blades. I also have some skiptooth blades but I haven't used them yet. When I bought the saw, I went to Lowe's and bought a 4' x 8' sheet of birch plywood and I've been practicing doing some basic shapes at this point. I'm about as much of a newbie at this as there is. I have an artistic itch that I try to scratch with different mediums. I've worked with wood before doing some woodburning but never using a scroll saw. I work with glass as well and read that you could use a scroll saw to cut glass with a diamond blade. In researching that, I saw all the beautiful work being done with a scroll saw and decided to see what all the fun was about. So here I am! So where do I start?

Hey tncharger, To get started I would start with the skip tooth blades. The spiral blades are too hard to control even for some experienced people. You didn't say how thick the birch plywood is but I would start with 1/2" to 3/4" thick wood. I usually start my students off with 3/4" pine. It"s cheap and cuts easily. For 3/4" material use a #5 skip tooth blade.
To start with, draw some straight lines on a practice piece of wood, and try to split the line. You will quickly find that you will not be able to cut the line straight. You have to angle the wood to cut the line. Once you have the straight lines mastered, then go with some curved lines then jagged lines with sharp corners.
Once you have cutting lines mastered then start on some simple patterns.

Hi, My name is John and I live in Nebraska. I recently retired from the railroad after 38 years. I have always been interested in woodworking
but never seem to have the time. Well now I have time!!!!!! After finding this web site and and seeing all the nice work and the wealth of information available and I decided to give it a try. I purchased the Dewalt 788 FD blades. Now for some newbie questions. After reading about the upper arm problems with the 788 I also ordered the easy lift system. But when I received the the saw and set it up I noticed that the upper arm will stay raised up on its own. Did Dewalt make changes to it or will it eventually not stay up. I guess Im wondering if I should keep the easy lift or send it back. I have been practicing a lot with 1/4 inch
aspen and oak with reverse #3 and #5 FD blades. In general how long should a blade last, and on the 788 it seems the tension setting has to be set on 4 or 5 is when the blade is new, is that OK. Thanks for the replies in advance.

The upper arm on the 788 is designed to lower on it's own. I am a top feeder so I use that feature to my advantage. When feeding to the next hole, I release the lower blade clamp, With one hand I raise the upper arm, With the other hand I guide the blade into the next hole then lower the arm and tighten the blade clamp. It should take about five seconds to do this.
Blades do not last very long although Flying Dutchman blades last longer that most blades. I will always change a blade when starting a new project. Also when the blade no longer cuts the way you want, It's time to change it. It's not unusual to go through many blades cutting a project.
As far as tension, You want the blade as tight as you can get it without it slipping out of the blade clamp. You want to hear a high "ping" when you pluck the blade. So yes, tightening to four or five is OK

Greetings all,
I'm Jeremy from the Atlanta area. After about 8 months of begging and nagging my wife bought me an introductory scroll saw for christmas. It is the Ryobi from Home Depot, and after a few epic failures I have finally minimized my vibration and completed the cuts for the US Navy Veteran plaque in which SG has on the website. I'll post a pic when I sand and "finish" it. I'm looking forward to learning from you all and I am anxiously waiting my first order of FD UR-5's and 3's.

Hi ya'll! I'm Mac, from West Virginia. I've done some work on the scrollsaw in the past, but have been away from it for years. I'm hoping to get out my old Dremel scrollsaw and make some dust soon. :) (Working on setting up a small workshop space in my home. Wish me luck. lol)
I've been reading Steves blog for a little while now and have really enjoyed it all! Such great patterns and so much advice! Thanks for all you do Steve!

Welcome to the forum Duane, I'm Keith from Cornwall U.K. I agree with all Steve and the other members with what thay have said excepting one thing, GB is not the one to worry about, he's just a nice old gentleman. It's that Gabby and Rob Roy you all need to watch out for, the biggest pair of horse rustlers about!!! Seriously though, we are one big "Family" here and I don't think there is anything anyone here wouldn't do to help another family member. Whether it is a problem with your saw or the need to have a pattern made for you or even if you feeling down and just need to talk then we're all here for you.
PS. sorry Gabby and Rob was just funnin'. (but they needed to know the truth ;D ;D)

Hi all....Im living in Lompoc California and just recieved a scroll saw from a friend whos husband passes away some years ago.....I am a woodturner as a hobby and love (and sell) making both pens and bottle stoppers as well as terens (small bottles out of exotic woods. Good morning fellow woody's. Thank you Steve for all your patterns and advice. I am a female Manual Arts teacher in QLD, Australia. I am 1 of 6 in the state out of 4,000, other 3,994 are men.
I have used some of your designs to get my students into scroll sawing, let me say they are addicted. This past 3 yrs i have introduced them to Intarsia, Frett work, Turning, Pyrography, Inlay and Scroll sawing. Let me say they have been very busy and love the diversity in their learning. Thanks for the welcome and the great website. Been scrolling for a few years now and enjoying it. Looking forward to learning more and getting great ideas from your website and all who participate.
I do have one minor complaint though. Last year you posted a pattern for a wooden vase and I thought, "Wow! That is so cool! I've got to try that." So I did. Didn't turn out too bad for a first time. Then one of my daughters saw it and figured I could make a wooden salad bow. So I made that for her last Christmas following your instructions for figuring angles. It came out really well, but it was a pain to make. My other daughter saw the bowl and requested a bowl and four individual bowl to accompany it. After all this I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me to find any more "great ideas" on your website. (Just kidding.)

as a new member and a virtual begginner on the scroll saw I have just bought a Record SS16V variable speed scroll saw and I am finding difficulty in changing the plain end blades as the bottom arm drops when the blade is released from the top arm and I have to physically lift the bottom arm to locate the allen key and fit the blade. After watching you change a blade in about five seconds it takes me about five minutes. I would appreciate any advice to enable me to make easier work of it. Instruction manual not very informative

I have just picked up a bargain saw Hegner 2S variable speed, which has never been used and still in the box.
It looks like it is a pre 2010 model to me, it cuts great.

Hello! I am very new and very old.
Got my first scroll saw for Christmas. I have bought some spare blades so far, but have not started a project as yet.
I would like to build a stand for it first because it seems to have a harmonic vibration at a certain speed. I wants to jump off the table almost. It was just something inexpensive to start with. I noticed that they tend to get a little pricey.
Hoping it will add a new dimension to my other tools.
Table saw, drill press, band saw, lathe, routers, other power tools.

Hello my name is Abrahan im not new to ur site but new to forum. Im 35 yrs of age n about 1 1/2 yrs ago I found a talent of mine that has been hiding for god knows how long. I had a wood from a bed that broke on us few days earlier I started writing my wife initials n looked at my saw (jigsaw at the time) I started cutting letters out n sanding n b4 I knew it was stained n completed n I enjoyed the time I spent doing it. when I gave it to my wife of 15yrs she was surprised I made it now I own a scroll saw n have done over 100 projects still need to improve my skill but there's always room for improvement. I look back at my first woodwork n smile cause it not as good as I first saw it well it wasn't perfect but it opened an interest. attached is my first work so we can smile together.

Hi everybody, I'm Laurentian, I'm from Qu?bec, Canada. Retired, and getting re-acquainted with a scrollsaw. Had a cheap model 10 years ago, learned by myself doing craft pieces, because I could not do inside cuts, my saw had little 'blocks' to which I had to attach the blades, which was a real pain...and prevented me from evolving, so I was able to sell it, and forgot all about it until recently.
So I got interested again, went and bought the DW788, and went fully eqppd.to add to my arsenal of shop tools: table saw, jointer, planer, router table, bandsaw, drill presses (floor & bench), oscillating drum sander and the small bench 3 X 36in belt sander.
I still have some exotic wood pieces from way back so there's no problem with material.
I just finished scrolling a small 'horse puzzle' in ?in BB, which went well.
But I'll have to adress this topic elsewhere. So this is it, I'm looking forward to exchanging tricks & tips, from my experiences and yours.

hi evryone my names kevin and i have been scroll sawing for bout 10 years. but in the last year i have been adding to my talents now i incorprate wood carving with scrollsawing and its opendup a whole new world that has removed te limits of wood art. steve has made it so easy to be better then i ever thought i could be so steve thank you my family my church and well in fact my whole home town with your patterns and i little bit of myself throwen in. we have left them in awwwe i recently have gone back to grand father clocks and my mother in law was reduced to tears and my church again got a fresh glimps of your and my talents. as soon as my mother in-law gets the pics back i will post them. untill next time god bless and goodbye

Hello Everyone my name is Don from Illinois and I have been playing with wood for about 45 years. Since I was old enough to hold an axe. I have been scrolling for only 30+ years. I have obtained some Intarsia books and I am going to try my hand at them. I seen a bunch of them at our dentist office. They were all different types of animals and they all braces. They were pretty awesome. I have been getting Steves news letters for a while and never got an account to the form. I am looking forward to getting help and information in the future. Been subscribing to Steve's site for a few years now... My main projects have been stacks of jigsaw puzzles for my 4 year old grandson. I did buy an excaliber saw based on reviews primarily from Steve. I down load many of the plans and save them, I save ALL of the daily emails (what's the point of a Terabyte HD if not to load it with good stuff!)

Hi, this is Harv from Utah, here for the first time. I'm new to scrollsawing, but have been reading Steve's blog for a week or so. I have a clunky old Delta scrollsaw
that is so hard to change the blades on: doing fret work would be next to impossible. So my question is, what is the best scrollsaw on the market. My nest question
is, what is the best one I can buy in the mid-range that I can afford. Check me on this! My guess is that either the Hegner or the Excalibur would be the two top of the
line scrollsaws. But as they are a bit pricy, I'm thinking the DeWalt might be the top mid-range saw.
I'm thinking around $500 as my price, but I don't want to make a mistake for the sake of $100 or so.

Hi Harv and welcome to the forum. I'm Julie from Texas. Glad to have you. I am an EX21 user and have been for over 10 years so you can guess my opinion. When this forum started, most people were dewalt users. Many have upgraded to an Excalibur. It all depends on what you want out of your saw. I do a fair amount of bevel work (spiral bowls, inlays, etc.) so the fact that my table stays stationary and the head tilts is a huge factor for me. The table staying flat keeps you from fighting gravity on those kind of projects. Also, when you raise the arm, it stays up. There is a modification for the dewalt but when you start adding things to it, you may as well spend the extra money and get the better saw.

Hi All,
I live in Staffordshire in the th UK and have joined the group today. I am new to scroll sawing and have just bought a Sheppach Vario 405 saw with the intention of making wooden gear clocks. In order to gain some experience first I am eager to seach the internet for help and was very pleased to Find Steve's ScrollSawWorkshop site, which I think is amazing. So I am practicing by making all manner of things, but am still trying to source hardwood locally to use. It is so expensive here and there seems to be very few places to buy it from.
I have purchased an assortment of pin-less Pegas blades and am still trying to get used to blade tensioning and trying to reduce vibrations on my saw, but I'm sure I will enjoy my new found hobby.

Just a new member at 65 years young getting into getting covered in sawdust, pissing off neighbors when I run my scroll saw, dremel router, jig saw, and other stuff. Some people have NO SENSE OF HUMOR. In Seattle, surrounded by all the wood in the world, just got to figure out how to get it into my 400 sq.ft. APT. and not &*^^ off the mgnmt. "Off to conquer the World".

Hi all Scrollers. I am fairly new to the hobby, got my Scroll Saw about a year ago and have had a wonderful time learning to use it.... Had a Ryobi 16" piece of junk, then I used a Delta 20' DSW788 of a friend of mine and decided it was time to buy a better unit. :) :)... so far the best thing I ever did...Last Christmas I made a few gifts for some of my family and friends and decided I want to try my hand at Intarsia, but still deciding on the first project....Look forward to many years of enjoyment.

Good morning. I am Farmer Jim P or as my handle states Farmerjimp. I am a very young 74 year old kid. I have done woodworking all my life and have been in the construction industry for most of my working career since college which was a long time ago. One of my sons and his family have come to live with me and my wife and help out on the farm. Since the beginning of this year my son and I have decided to start a woodworking business to bring in some income to help out financially. In this process I have found the scroll saw and Steve's fantastic site and today I found this forum thing and said to myself, "Self, give that forum thing a shot". So here I am shooting off my mouth. I just wanted to stop in and say howdy y'all. I have looked at many scroll saw sites but am most impressed with this one and especially Steve. His character seems to come out in everything he says and does and I like that. Mr. Good you are a good man. I have made a number of items, baskets and boxes mostly, from the free patterns and even I am impressed with the finished product. One of my daughters took a bunch of items to work with her to show off and immediately sold a bunch. Before I leave for today I just wanted to say thank you Steve for sharing your knowledge, talent and time with us and I am sure there are others who feel the same as I do but have just not gotten around to stating it here or displaying it by their actions of pressing the donate button. Good day to all you fine scrollers and may God bless each of you in a special way today.

Judy, I have a small farm in central North Carolina. When I retired and was looking for a place to settle down I was riding down the road and saw an exit sign that said High Point Climax exit and I knew I had found my Paradise. So I found a lovely place in Climax.

I am a newbie here and to scroll sawing! I think I have watched every video Steve has on YouTube in preparation to begin this adventure. As a quilter a lot of what I'm seeing looks very familiar! Right now we are outfitting our woodworking shop we built so I don't even have my saw yet! I am happy to find this forum and the availability to ask questions from experienced scrollers! Hi gang, OK, time to call the home and wake up all the old gals and fellers so they can crank up those DeWalt 788's and get to cuttin'. I'm sort of new to this site, I remember registering at least a year ago, but don't remember any postings since the initial registration. So, I guess this would be it. I'm a lifelong woodworker: taught woodworking, leather carving and electrical science for the local 4-H club for over 20 years and my wife and I coached the local 4-H softball team. Interest eventually drizzled down to nothing when we lost our meeting place along with the ground the ball-field was on. The kids got older and not enough young kids came in to keep it going so we just let it close up.
As for the scrollsawing, I went through three other units, each one a little better than the one before till I picked up this latest unit at an estate sale last year. It's great, but I did notice the problem of the small button knob on the blade tightening end. I got tired of that real quick and made something similar to your last entry, only I made mine just about twice the size of the actual knob on the machine, then cut out the hole for the knob. It certainly cuts down on the amount of effort that it takes to loosen the upper blade end and retighten it. I'm going to try one of the ones you made too, with the dowel handle to see which way I like better. Till then, happy cutting boys and gals. Corky

We have had 49 new members join the forum so far this month. I see that several of you have posted already and are off to a good start. If this is your first experience using an online forum don't hesitate to ask for help. No question is silly, well maybe a few are silly but who cares we are all friends here.
Jump in and try things out. You won't break anything unless you hit the "Any" key which will wipe out the database and collapse the internet. Don't worry though because I have the internet backed up on my local hard drive.
There are not many rules here except to watch out for GrayBeard. He's a little scary but the doctors allow him out two days a week now.
Russ is my hugely under paid moderator here. He keeps watch over things and relentlessly bans the spammers(bad guys) to keep them from spoiling the family fun. He accepts tips preferably in small denomination unmarked bills.
There are craftsmen and women here from all levels of the craft. When you see the beautiful cuttings by Mrsn, Cherie, Merlin and others or the incredible intarsia by Intarsia92 don't be intimidated. They started just like you. Except for Intarsia92 who came out of the womb making beautiful intarsia. We also have some great pattern designers here like grandpa who helps more scrollers than Tylenol. Sheila Landry who is one of the top five pattern designers in the world today and yes I'm jealous. We even have a few readers that don't even have a scroll saw yet. They just enjoy learning while they wait to buy a saw. A couple of them are here looking to pick up women but I happen to know they are broke so don't waste your time ladies.
Glad to have all of you with us here and I hope you enjoy the forum and make a few new friends while you are at it. If you have friends that you think would enjoy the hobby send them our way and we will do our best to get them addicted to saw dust just like us.

Being new to scrolling, I also did an internet search. This site has been my go-to site for most everything. I have learned so much from Steve's videos! His patterns are terrific. I have been making trivets, baskets, and bowls like mad. This is so relaxing for me that my wife knows if she can't find me in the house, I'll be at my saw.

Hi all! Most call me John Di. I began this scrolling phenomenon about a year ago. After many youtubes from different posters I kept coming back to Steves contributions. I have learned the most from him. I'm 73 and I have been woodworking since I was a freshman in highschool. Health issues have slowed me down considerably. First off, I joined officially on August of 2016. However, all I did was one small post saying hi and thank you for letting me join. I added that I would be introducing myself later....lol...well LATER Happend NOW, Here on Sunday, June 4th, 2017. Yes, I am slow, not just with this forum, but life in general. Let me give you a quick run down of who I am and I am open to questions later if you have any.
I have been a scroll saw artist for 2 years now and equally as much with woodworking in the general sense of things. I use every machine and tool in a normal shop except for the standard table saw that we have. I can not afford to fall into the machine...I am paralyzed in my left leg.
My Passion is SAWDUST....lol...now, you are wondering what this has to do with Scroll Sawing? EVERYTHING
I have been working on a NEW Art Form working with Saw Dust. It is more of a System then anything. Yes, I DO Scroll Saw my Sawdust....lol....I hope to show everybody my work in the near future. I do just about ANY Kind of wood working using saw dust. Working with Sawdust is NOT A new thing, but its HOW I work with it that changes things. If I can get the word out about working with sawdust, I hope to change the woodworking community as a whole for the better (not that anything is wrong with the way thing are now....lol...I just want to ADD To the world of woodworking the surprising and delightful things a person can do with the plentiful sawdust that gets accumulated in the shop)I have not been on youtube for the last 4 months or so...for a variety of reasons, but saying that, my physical problems are not exactly getting better, infact they get worse. But, I have decided to go back to youtube because I want so much to share with the world this new art working with Sawdust. I am like a SPONGE Soaking up all the information I get from the other woodworkers and the scroll saw artists are at top of my list. In-fact, Steve Good and Russel Claridy are my Friends and I learn from both of them as often as possible. I am usually on the "Lets Talk Shop with Russ" Show on Saturday Nights too, but the last 4 months I have hidden myself away from all parts of life due to pain, and other crazy reasons. I am about ready to come back to the show and support the panel again and support Russel and his quest speakers. I have NEVER Stop supporting the Woodworking Community, I have just been behind the sense in lots of pain both physically and emotionally. My Heart has been broken so many times in my life its a wonder I can still keep a positive attitude going. Saying that, I am one of those ppl that KEEP A smile on my face and try very hard to see life in the MOST Positive aspect possible. I build not only my self up, but others as well....I look for the good in everybody where I can. I face each day with my Disability with MUCH Enthusiasm.....I look for the things in my Day that I CAN Do....instead of sit around and talk about the things in my day that I can NOT Do....I keep as positive as possible. Saying that, Everybody goes thru things and I went thru the valley the last 4 months in so many ways....but I kept pushing forward towards the Horizon. I have the BEST DAY EVER....Each and Every Day...Even on my WORST Days.....I refuse to wallo in the gunk of life and I push forward and MAKE My world the best in can be and I help others do the same. I could not do any of this stuff called "LIFE" If it were not for the Love that God gives me each and every day. Jesus is my Lord and Savior in him I put my Trust. Ok all....I am very excited to LEARN From YOU....And have YOU Learn From Me....Scrolling is a Beautiful Art, one that I am so glad to spend my time enjoying. I hope you all have the Very BEST Day Ever, I truly mean this :-)

My Question became answered when I went to your web site...and then my question got UN Answered...lol....The EMAIL ME Link does NOT Work on your web site...the link above your head is a dead link. Also, when I write you from MY Email, you never get my messages. I reply to the newsletter and it is as if it goes no place. How is somebody, like ME Your Friend....supposed to get an email to you....lol

Hi Shelly, the link is correct but you have to have an email client associated with your browser. Because so many people use online email now it causes issues. I have added the email address below the button now so people can also just copy and paste. That's probably easier than trying to explain how to update the browser setting to make it work. Thanks for reminding me that I needed to correct that.

Je sui un nouveau membre Français du québec. Dernièrement, je me suis acheté une scie "Excelsior" qui ressemble aux scies Excalibur. J'ai aussi une Dewalt DW788 que j'ai depuis 2011, mais elle fait trop de bruit et je n'ai pas le temps de la réparer.
De 2011 à 2012 j'ai fait pas mal de casse-têtes de 200 à 400 pièces. J'ai expérimenter beaucoup au cours de ces années de casse-têtes.
Maintenant avec ma nouvelle scie Excelsior 16" je voudrais continuer les casse-têtes, mais aussi quelques boites et peut-être quelques gros projets...

I am a new French member from Quebec. Recently, I bought myself a saw "Excelsior" which looks like Excalibur saws. I also have a Dewalt DW788 I have since 2011, but it makes too much noise and I do not have time to fix it.
From 2011 to 2012 I did a lot of puzzles from 200 to 400 pieces. I have a lot of experience from these years of puzzles.
Now with my new saw Excelsior 16" I would like to continue the puzzles, but also some boxes and maybe some big projects ...
Actually I'm doing the "Amazing Marble Machine" with my small bandsaw and the Excelsior...

Welcome to the forum all newbies and the more seasoned scrollers as well. Scrolling is so relaxing, and chances of cutting a finger off is nil but have your knuckles rapped by the tighttner knob is a real possibility

Don't take as much time as I should to work in my little shop but enjoy using both my bandsaw and scrollsaw to create. I found this site and forum along with all the patterns to use and wanted to sign up for the forum. I am having issues with the patterns use in windows 10 and Google Chrome--trying to get that all worked out. In the meantime, I would love to find a good 3d moose pattern! Not the big ones but a little one similar to the many small 3d deer out there.

After printing out the pattern I measure the height at 3 1/2" and width as 4 1/2". The thickness of the wood is 3/4".

Hi Garry from pa.New to scrolling been a hobby accessories most of my life and this is totally diffeerent.going from the accuracy of the machine to your ability. can you scroll foam board? i am interested mainly in 1/4" but am open to other thicknesses.

Good morning all,
My name is Jim ( username jpaskell) Purchased a used Dewalt DW788 on Facebook. Thought I'd try it after watching all the YouTube videos from Steve Good, Hans Meier, Bob Brokaw and the Gwinnett woodworkers site as well as others.
Glad to be here for what I know will be questions I have that will be helpful from those in the know.
I'm retired and took up woodworking a few years ago, but with the price of lumber, realized scroll saw work was satisfying and required less expensive wood due to smaller projects that still provide great looking results. Smaller, thinner and sometimes able to use some leftovers from other work.
Look forward to visiting often and asking, hopefully, not dumb, questions.

Hello All. New Member here. I'm a semi-retired consulting engineer, meaning I still work if a paying client calls me, but I don't market my services anymore. I live in a suburb of of metropolitan Atlanta.
I've been slowly trying to outfit a very small shop in a room off my garage. I got interested in scroll saws while looking for a used bandsaw. One thing led to another and soon I found irresistible deals on an old 16" Craftsman and then an almost new Porter Cable 18" scroll saw, which now live in my garage. I'm currently working on getting better at blade changes in the PC.
I used to be (pre-pandemic) band that played music in nursing homes, but that scene is pretty much on hold until this pandemic is over. One of my dreams is to build a guitar and a ukulele, but reading about scrolling has me interested in the many simple scroll saw patterns and intarsia. I blame that on all the many excellent videos the Gwinnett Scroll Saw Group has on YouTube. I live in an adjacent county to Gwinnett and may see if I can get to a meeting of that group some post pandemic day.
Anyway, glad to be a member of this forum. Thanks for having me.
