Title: Rounded sides on small cedar box
Post by: Jim Finn on September 22, 2016, 09:11:53 am
I saw a video on line showing how to make this box with rounded sides and lineal inlay all around the four sides of the box. Mine is a little different than the one in the video but that video gave me the idea for this project. This box measures 6"x8"x2" deep. I put a Magnolia blossom inlay in the hinged lid but a plain top would also look nice. The lineal inlay all around the rounded sides is 1/16" poplar. The box is made of eastern red cedar and is flocked on the inside. The magnolia blossom inlay includes Poplar (leaves) Maple and Bois'darc. I used a wipe on poly for the finish. Lots of extra steps in making this. Fun to make, but I am not sure it is worth the effort as an item to sell.

That is no $5.00 box.  That looks very time consuming.  Nicely done.

Excellent work, Jim,
I like all your projects and this one is exceptionally nice.
Around here, I couldn't get enough money to make it worth the
time on any of the boxes you make. This one should surely bring
a good price if your area will support the sales and asking price.
God Bless! Spirithorse

Spirit horse:  I sell 99% of my boxes for $20 I sold these for $25.  I am in a low wage part of the country so my prices must be kept low in order to sell much of anything.  If I wanted to travel to Dallas , for instance, I am sure I could get more for these boxes. I am just too lazy for that.  My $20 boxes cost me $3 in materials and two hours to make.  (making them twenty at a time).

I used to know a man who did inlay boxes very similar to this one.  He had a deal with a couple of private jewelry stores and that box would have easily sold for $60 - $100.00.  A small one for earrings often sold for $50.00.  The store kept 20%.  He sold between 10 and 20 a month, more at Christmas.
