Title: New scroll saw magazine
Post by: Wooden Lace on November 23, 2015, 02:35:16 pm
I'm a bit surprised that no one has mentioned the new scrolling magazine coming out.  Steve told about it in his Nov 21 post.  It's called Scrollers Choice & Woodworking Arts magazine.  The first issue can be pre-ordered now and will be sent out Dec 3.  I've ordered mine and can't wait to get it.  Their website shows pics of some of the holiday patterns.  Price says 6.95 per issue, plus postage and it's apparently not a subscription, just available for purchase by the issue.

Always excited to see something new coming out, although in today's market, seems like it would be an e-magazine, but it's not.  I'm hoping lots of people order so they can continue.

Hey Nancy I signed up but no payment yet.  Did you do something different after signing up for payment?

I put my name in too but I would like to know the shipping cost.  I am in Canada and sometimes the P&H is a killer.

Too bad not available electronically.

Can anyone supply a web-site address or contact info, please?
Doing a google search, I could not even find this magazine unless
it is the People's Choice mentioned in scrollsawer.com.

Here is the link

http://scrollerschoicemag.wix.com/home

It is for Pre order only.  Supposedly going to ship Dec 4 but I have not heard from them yet.

Little late for Christmas this year.

Sound like a very low budget operation as they are trying to see how many sales before they print.
I hope they do well but its a tough market for print media.
I would much rather see a scroll magazine in a online version maybe like what "Woodsmith" does. If for nothing else  then to be able to search every issue on line is great when looking for specific projects.
I have the Holiday issue that Fox Chapel put out last year and revised this year but their online project seems to have stalled.

Hi Karl,

I haven't heard anything else from them since I signed up for the pre-order.  Really wanting to get this, even though it will be too late to cut for this Christmas...with any luck I'll still be around next year!

Maybe, but that is a good idea.  If the interest is not there - then no money is lost on anyone's part and the designer can still sell their patterns online.

I looked at the link but I only see patterns for sale. What I was referring to is a complete magazine online. It's a nice option and easy to read & research.

Sorry I copied the wrong link, here's the correct one:

http://www.scrollsawartist.com/?subcats=Y&status=A&pshort=Y&pfull=Y&pname=Y&pkeywords=Y&match=any&search_performed=Y&q=e-Magazine&dispatch=&dispatch=products.search&utm_source=getresponse&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=scrollsawartist&utm_content=Scrollsawartist+patterns+-+An+early+Christmas+gift

(If anyone can tell me how to insert a link behind a word or two I'd appreciate it.)

These are mainly pattern magazines, but I think she has an article or two also.

I agree it would be great to have an online magazine as well, but I do like holding a physical copy in my hands.

Karl, thanks for the corrected link. I understanding about holding the magazine in your hand, that is what I like about the woodsmith setup they send you a paper copy and and you also have access to the magazine online. Very little scroll or craft type projects but a great general woodworking magazine.  I also have the online library which gives you access to all back copies.
This would be a great format for scroll and crafts as with a online magazine its so easy to print out a pattern. I am sure you know about  the magazine but  link below for those who do not.

Thanks for the link, Don,
It appears that for USA orders, the total is $11.55.
That seems way too high-priced per issue for my taste.

I am not going to bite.

$12.50 USD to Canada.  That equates to about $17 in CDN $.  I would rather donate that to Steve or pick and choose from pattern makers directly.

$12 50 to Canada

Add the conversion to Canadian $ and it is closer to $18 out of my wallet. too rich for me.

I have corresponded this to the mag and suggested they relook at their business plan for e delivery option.

They have PDF for Canada for $7.50.

Yes they now have payment active and here are the prices:

US Purchase (print):   $11.55
Canada (print):          $12.50 usd
PDF (Canada / UK):    $7.50 usd

The magazine is $6.50 (print US) so that makes shipping: $5.05!

WOW, that is steep.

I'm guessing there will be no advertising as that usually pays for a lot of the costs involved with printing.

I would like to know who are the scrollers who are putting this out.  Nothing on the website says anything about who they are.
(I have an idea who they might be based on the contents listed on the site, but I don't know for sure.)

If this was made as a PDF only to ALL countries, I would really consider making the purchase.

Yes, I thought the freight was way too high, also.  But I bought it anyway just to see if it was worth it.  If there are enough good patterns that I would buy separately anyway, it may be worth it.  We'll see.

I have not received my copy yet.  I've been wondering, too.  They send a digital version to those who bought a hard copy but I haven't even opened it.  I want the magazine.  That is what I paid for.

This is the first I heard of this magazine. I agree that the price sounds kind of steep, even in the US ($11.55 for magazine with shipping). One option is the PDF version as a shipping option but it says Canada / UK. What about the US? Can we get the PDF for $7.50? How do I contact the publisher with questions?

Hello All
Hope everyone had a Great Christmas!
I was wondering if anyone received the hard copy of the magazine yet?

Last I heard they've gone to print (week of dec. 8th), and wouldn't be sent out till after Christmas.
was emailed the pdf down load, but still waiting on hard copy.

They didn't ever get back to me with the shipping amount, after I pre-ordered, so couldn't actually order.  Seems they aren't too organized.  If there's a PDF version, I'd sure rather have that than pay the extra for shipping.

This was the first Christmas season in years that I haven't purchased any new ornament patterns.  Seems the designers either didn't come out with any, or they just weren't the kind my buyers want.  My best sellers are the classics...snowflakes, stars, crosses, angels and nativities.  Throw in a few horse or cat related and a gingerbread man and there's my best seller list.

Oh well, maybe next Christmas.

Having read all of your posts re the new magazine, I have decided to wait until they become more established. I spotted a scroll saw magazine here in Aussie. I was attending a doctors appointment and called in at the local newsagent to buy a magazine to read. I bought the magazine 'ScrollSaw Woodworking & Crafts'. It was the holiday version with 60 patterns inside. I paid Aus$21.50 for it. I know it was pretty expensive I hear you say. But, when I got home, I checked out the magazine on the internet and found I could subscribe for 2 years (8 issues) for US$59. This included postage.
That is a much better price to pay. If I had bought the magazine from the newsagent each time it would cost me $172.... Now I am saving $113 by subscribing.

When the new magazine is well established, I will consider subscribing to that one as well.

I ordered on Dec 13th,  to date I have received nothing from them, no email, no magazine, no PDF.  NOT a good start..I may have to demand a full refund.

I have now begun a Paypal complaint resolution as I have repeatedly attempted to contact these folks with no result.  Here it is mid February, and no contact, or magazine has been shipped.  I surely hope that others have received what they paid for, or at least been able to contact the seller.  Hopefully, I can get a refund from Paypal, as it has become obvious that the seller can not, or will not meet their obligation.

Well they are advertising their next issue with two intarsia patterns.  One from Bruce Worthington and the other from Garnett Hall.

Maybe we should ask if these pattern makers know anything?  I don't see the listing they had for the first issue, but there were well known names there as well.

When I checked out their website, there were no clickable links, so, you could not place an order even if you wanted to.
