 i like cutting to a line or outline rather than a solid gray or black object or
letter. is there a free program where i can change a couple of solid black
patterns to outlines? thanks for your help. termite

you can download Inkscape and do it in that

I use Irfanview.  Load the jpg or bmp file then go to Images-effects-edge detection. you will end up with a negative picture.  Go to images-negative.  Voila, there you are.

Hi, Termite,
You probably already have PAINT on your computer and, with
tutorial help from the internet, you can probably accomplish what
you want with that program.
May people have recommended GIMP and INKSCAPE on various wood-worker's
forums because they are free down-loads.

Termite - I attached a description of the process I use for converting from a B&W pattern to a shaded outline using Inkscape.
