Title: Runner Duck
Post by: EIEIO on August 06, 2013, 11:12:57 am
Here's a push duck for little kids - 3 or 4. Our 2 year old grandniece can't quite keep it upright, but the 4 year old has no problem. It reminds me of the duck in the movie "Babe" who realized that Roosters didn't get eaten so he started crowing every morning.  :D :D :D

The plans are from here:
http://www.runnerduck.com/push_toy.htm

I left the wheels just pushed on so I can disassemble it to paint. It's made from 7/8" ash body and wheels with 1/4" oak ply wings. The feet are cut from a piece of rubber roofing. The axle and the eye are 1/4" oak dowels. The push sick is 3/8" oak dowel 18" long with a thread spool on the end.

I like the grain so may just shellac it rather than paint.

There's only one thing I noticed about push along toys is you can't stop pushing them around the room to try them out. lol nice work.

Love to play with them, I mean I love to make them for the kids. Thanks for the link, I'll have to make me one, I mean make one for the kids. It's great having grandkids-people come over and see the toys around the house, I just say they belong to the kids.

RAY, I remember those from years ago. Great piece of nostalgia.

How long did you leave THIS ONE in the microwave? ??? ??? ???

Very nice!  I have made and sold these in the past.  Kids love them.  Making yours a bit shorter would help to keep it easier to keep it upright for the littler ones.  For feet, I cut up tool box liners/pads from Harbor Freight. Enough to make hundreds of feet for $2. I like a natural finish so I did not paint them.  You sure have made a cute toy there!

I have been making these for a few years now and they sell very well. It is the adults that really enjoy them as much as children do.

that's a very nice toy, we actually make those for kids with disabilities at the woodshop where I volunteer. A lot of the kids need exercise and don't always want to just go for a walk, but if you ask them if they want to take their duck out...it's not a problem :)

Humm, I have a three year old grandson,,,  does it make a lot of noise, I love to make him toys that make a lot of noise.  My way of getting even with my daughter for all  the noise she made growing up!

You did a great job...

It make a little sound as the feet flap, but probably not enough to drive your daughter nuts. How about a drum? or a wooden mallet?

If you want to drive the parents nuts for a week or so, drums and whistles are both tried and true items........

Hey Rog,  I can also, from personal experience, vouch for the instrument I've played all my adult life....TUBA!
I have been a pro Musician for the past 30 years, though now being Disabled I don't do any touring.  It's a hard life as a touring Musician.   ;)
