Title: Simple trucks

These trucks are simple cuts from 1.5 x 2" lumber and use 1.5" diameter Hobby Lobby wheels (19 wheels for $3.99). You can use a pine 2x4 if you like, but the photo shows a pickup and a van cut from 3/4" thick red oak that was ripped to 2" then glued to 1.5 x 2.

The pickup bed is a compound cut made from the piece that was cut out of the blank when cutting the cab and chassis.

Axles are 1/4" oak dowels. Drill the axle holes 9/32" before cutting the shape. I used Feed-n-wax on the axles before gluing the wheels on. They seem to roll very well - they beat a Hot Wheels car for roll distance on a ramp test. Not too scientific, but pretty fun.

Castle Rock - isn't that one of Steven King's favorite monster towns up in Maine? Maybe where Pennywise lurked?

By the way, EIEIO that picture of the clown always creeps me out.  There's some movies I don't like to watch and that was one of them...

    There's a Castle Rock Colorado, Castle Rock Washington and I think Stephen King's
company is called Castle Rock something or other.

Great looking toys. My local woodworking group makes toys to be distributed freely by 23 agencies in our area before Christmas. I think I may make a few  from your patterns for distribution. (PS  this year we made over 7000 wooden toys and treasurers)

I hope you like them. The oak has a nice weight, but a pine 2x4 will also work. I've since then gotten used to making the wheels. There are a few tutorials for doing that. It's easier than it looks if you have a belt sander to clean up to the line. But if you're in a hurry, the Hobby Lobby wheels are pretty good - but add $1 to the material cost.

I saw an Instructable where a guy used hair clippers to cut roadways into a carpet remnant. That would be a nice adder to these trucks.

Yes sir, i just got an order in last week of 250 1" wheels from American WoodWorking Supply (i think) plus some clock inserts. Ive been using the outlines of pickups, camaros, mustangs, beetles, etc to make 3-4" little pocket cars. Ive been making mine out of whatever scraps i have left over which is notmally 3/4" stock. Try to use up everything i can and get the most out of it. Any hardwoods i leave alone and hit with a little shellac. The pines and poplar i paint. IMO, its sacrilegious to paint hardwoods. :-).  They go great at shows for $3 or 2 for $5. Especially when a youngin is with their mom and pestering her. ;-)
