I have decided to try my hand at intarsia after seeing all the great pieces you guys make and have started with a simple Deer. my question is How do you cut and shape the small bits around the eyes !!!!!!! Thanks in advance .........Paul
-
hey grandpa on the ones i have done around the eyes i used a flexshaft or a dremal to shape them on the real small parts that are the same wood i dont cut them out i just shape them with the dremal
-
I shape/sand small pieces, such as around the eyes of the Deer, either with my Foredom flex-shaft tool or on the horizontal foam-backed 2-1/2 " X 7" sander, see attached picture. If the pieces are very small I'll use double sided tape and fasten them to a piece of scrap to save my finger tips.
Note: The sander only turn at about 1,100 rpm which is a little easier on the fingers.
The motor is a 1925 GE. and still runs like new.

Sorry, didn't get the picture attached before I hit the button,

Grandpa, I do the same as Joeyand Intarsia92. Be sure the grain is running in the direction you want to complement the piece. Some times I cut them a little larger than the pattern then take off the extra with my flexable rotary tool . Mine has a variable speed so I slow it down when the pieces are tiny or I do it by hand. Looks good so far. ;D

Well I finished the Deer, didn,t turn out to bad for my first one, I don,t think i will be doing another my fingers are to big ;D
for all the small bits and there ain,t to much skin left on them.......Paul

very nice work there Paul, is that a bit of skin left hanging on it's antler??lol
-
wow nice work Paul.

It came out great Paul!

Good Job Paul, The Deer looks very nice. I think you ought to stick with it. Just pick patterns with larger pieces. A lot of times, except with things like eyes and such, small areas can be incorporated into larger areas and no one knows the difference.
-
Great work Paul. Keep at it, you will learn ways to do the small pieces, I did. and as Intarsia 92 says NO ONE knows only you. ;D
-
Nice job there Paul, keep going with it, you should be able to design a beaut of a pattern sans small pieces.
-
great job paul!

That came out nice Paul.

Really nice job Paul. Thought you were having problems but it don't look like it from the results. Good work.
-
You did a terrific job Paul. Don't give up, remember we all learn as we go along, lots of men have big fingers and they manage to keep going with it. 10 out 10 for effort.
