Just wondering what size of wood doe you use to make your frames--most of my cuttings are 8x10--I use 3/4 stock and have been cutting them 1 1/2 in wide--but some times( a lot) they look too wide once I put the picture in them--any suggestions out there--Richard aka thumbs :-\ :-\

hey Richard i'm not a frame maker as such but i made 3 of them about 2 weeks ago for some 8"x10" portraits i was doing.check them out in the brag form. i cut them 1&1/4" wide and routed them with an roman ogee bit on the out side and a round over bit on the inside.hope thats of help to you. http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=9455.0 (http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=9455.0)

That is the same size I use Richard, ?"x 1?". I run mine through a shaper to give the front detail and cut the rabbit on my table saw with a stacked dado blade. Doesn't look to wide to me. 8)

I?ve made a lot of framed Intarsias and have found that if I make my frames, following this basic RULE OF THUMB, they turnout visually appealing:
Split the difference over the height and the width to determine the frame width.
1? = 1 foot So, if a picture is 12? x 12? then 1? wide frame. A picture that is 12? x 24? then split the difference and it?s 1.5? wide. A 36? x 60? picture gets a frame 4? wide.
On Large pictures if you make the frame ?? wider or narrower it?s OK, it?s still within the Rule Of thumb. Hope this helps.

Al tho I've never had that "problem", I think that I would set the fence of my table saw close to the blade (depending on how much you need to remove) and rip off a strip on all four outer sides of the frame. Then you could run the frame on the router table to put a roundover or ogee shape edge on it to finish it off.
I like Intarsia 92/s idea and formula for planning ahead. I had never considered anything like that before. Neat idea! ;)

when I make frames for her I make them 1" wide x 3/4" deep.

I use 3/4" x 1 1/2" most of the time for anything that is larger than 8" x 10"...anything larger it totally depends on the 'art' being framed. Putting a 3" x 3/4" frame on a delicate 'humming bird' piece is too much. And by the same token putting a 1" x 3/4" frame of a scene of Indians and buffalo is way too small.
Frame the 'picture' to suit...Be Creative! Make the frame part of the total piece.
