What is the thinnest size of wood you can go to for intarsia?

You can really use anything as long as it works with your overall theme. Me personally I have not gone below 1/2".

I use 3/8" thick wood for my intarsia work. 1/8" Masonite backing. Keeps it light.

I use full 1 inch which is really 3/4 inch thick. Then I use the belt sander to give the 3D effect. It makes a lot of dust but you have something to play with when creating the effect of depth. ;D

For the Main Body of intarsias, I start out with 3/4" wood and shim it up or sand it down to create the 3D affect. I very seldom sand below 3/16".
For Water or Sky areas I'll normally use 1/8" or 1/4", depending on the situation.
For Backers I use 1/4" Birch Ply.

Thanks guys, I have printed off this page so that I can hang it up in the garage for reference.

I use mostly 1/4 or 3/8 for all my intarsia. i know that is not according to rules, but it works for me. mostly becouse i use an epoxy rosin mix for finish, and it runs off the high spots. john.
