Title: My 2 latest projects
Post by: DWSudekum on December 31, 2011, 02:22:11 pm
Here are 2 of my latest projects.

The bowl is clear pine and black walnut.  It is 4 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches tall.  It was finished with shellac.

The box was made for a friend that wanted a box that looked like a piece of 2x4 lumber.  This box is 1 7/8 inches x 3 1/2 x 4 inches long and has been flocked in a wine color.  It was stained a light oak and then tung oiled.

Love the projects.  Is the box made from one piece of 2 x 4 or did you build the sides with miters?

Actually Karl I took a couple of 7/8 in thick pine and glued them together then cut the top and bottom off then cut o out the middle and the inner part of the box and then glued the top and bottom back in place so that the grain all looks like it was whole.

Great looking pieces, but as this is scroll work, how the heck did you make the bowl?  That really intrigues me and looks like something I would really enjoy.    Would you be willing to provide some additional "instructions" on the process for making a bowl?

Thanks

The bowl was made totally by scroll saw there has been no lathe work.  There is an awesome book I recomend that you get for your library.  The author is Carol Rothman and the the book is Making Wooden Bowls from the Scroll Saw.
Here is a link to the book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Bowls-Scroll-Easy-Make/dp/1565234332 (http://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Bowls-Scroll-Easy-Make/dp/1565234332).  The process I used to make the bowl is very similar to the process Carol writes about.  It is a fun and different way to use the saw.
