I gave the Ex 21 a really good work out. Finally got it running smoother and figured out the blade change. But I am taking it back. After due consideration it just isn't $800 better than my DeWalt 788.
Sorry to be the wet blanket on an otherwize great product. If I was just starting out or just had a piece of crap saw, it would be great.
-
oh come on judy. EX-21 is better then the dewalt dw788.
-
Not $800.00 better ;D
-
Wow, Judy, I bought my EX-30 for $799. How much is your dealer charging?
Bill
-
It was priced at $820. less 10% for dealer days plus 7% tax ...$789.66
You must have got a great price.
-
Oh, I misunderstood what you meant. When you said "Not $800 better" I took that to mean it was a price difference of $800. :P

I have a piece of crap saw, but I don't have $800 to spare! :-[

It's ok Judy. The one time I tried an EX was the first demonstration at the Woodcraft store. I went in the day before so I could try it out. I gave it a good workout but decided to go with a DeWalt as that is what I was used to. I just couldn't get the hang of it. That's not to say I wouldn't try one again!
-
Thanks DG, I have been feeling a little quilty about the whole mess. I just think I am like an old cow that prefers the stall she is used to ;D But I gave it a shot.
-
I can't take mine back it was a gift from my husband so I intend to use both the DeWalt and the EX21. If its a paid job I use the DeWalt and if it's for me I'll be on the EX21. But I can understand where you are coming from Judy.

Hey Jude the Ex is a good saw, but I have not tried a Dewalt so I cant compare, in fact down under the second best is probably a ryobi or some such thing, and after using a heap of crap like that any thing is good

Hey, my Hegner is also fine ;)
Every scroller should use what feels best to him/her.
It's not about the saw or the brand of blades you use, it's about what you make with it.
-
Hi Judy ,what did you do to get it running smoother ? i have tried to move the motor but it only seems to get worse! i run mine about half speed and it runs fine but if turn it up it really starts to vibrate and after the problems i had when i first got it i dont want to mess around with it to much. Peter

do like Julief says, call Ray at seyco.
-
Thanks everyone for the support. I wouldn't feel right calling Ray at Seyco since I didn't buy it there.
Peter. I just had to have my son tighten all the bolts on the stand and it was better but I think the vibration would loosen them again so it would be an on going job.
-
Hang in there Judy. Everyone thinks they need a Cadillac but, a Ford will get you there just as fast. ;)

Also - no one will ask for the saw you made something on.
They always ask for the wood, the pattern etc. but not for the saw.
-
Good thought Torsten, thanks ;D
-
Judy if you have a problem with bolts loosening from vibration, have your son use Locktite or get some self locking nuts they are usually available at the hardware store, problem solved.
Some times it's better to dance with the one who brung ya! LOL

Gabby, Judy....I have learned over my many years...It is always best to dance with the one that brung ya!
Wanderin' into a new pasture can be interesting but you are usually better off to stay home!

Is that like saying the grass is always greener on the other side?
-
That is part of it, Dan.
But after you climb the fence and the barbed wire rips the seat out of your overalls you find that the grass is even greener where you came from and you risk scratching your backside to get back where you were in the first place!
I guess I am saying "If it is working for you, don't try to fix it!" Be satisfied with what you have.
Would I be a better 'scroller' with an EX-21?
Maybe!
But it ain't worth $800 to find out until my DeWalt shoots craps and I have to make a decision on a replacement. At my age the DW will most likely outlive my productive years anyway.

I returned the Ex-21 yesterday without a problem. Ordered some parts for the 788 and will make it work for a while longer. Did they really quit making the DeWalt 788?? I saw the gray version (Delta) in the store I returned the EX to.
The vision of GB's ripped bibs was just way to much ;D gotta go have coffee now.
-
If you ponder too much on just where GB's "bibs" may have ripped, it may cause you to reach for something a little stronger than coffee ..... ;D ;D

after many years of use, my old 788 failed. I didn't want to be without a saw so I bought a new 788 a little over a year ago. I could of got an EX at my 15% discount at Woodcraft, but I chose to go with what worked for me. I'm not saying that there was anything wrong with the EX, I just decided to stick with what worked for me.
Both saws pretty much work the same. After all, both saws originally were designed and built by the same company, Summerville Designs in Canada. DeWalt then sent the manufacturing to Taiwan, And summerville sold out to General International, also being buit in Taiwan.
-
So what do you know about the Delta that is supposed to be exactly like the DeWalt 788?
-
The color is different.
Same saw, built by the same company, with a different name.
Rog
-
Roger is right. Delta was owned by Black & Decker which owns DeWalt. The DeWalt brand is their contractor grade line, and Delta is marketed to the woodworking trades. So Black & Decker decided to market the saw to the woodworking trades. So the saw is identical to the 788 except the color and emblems. Now, Delta has been sold to another company. At this point, I don't know who will be selling the saw, but I'm sure someone will!

Got one today for $450. includes stand and light. I am assuming since they are the same, I shouild be able to buy DeWalt parts for it if necessary.
