Can you use Poly on pine or will it just soak in and not leave a shine?

you can put poly on pine. If it is soaking in you will need to build up a few layers of poly, but it will eventually cover. This works with other woods as well.
also many thin coats work better then one thick coat.

If you want to avoid splotching (pine is notorious for splotching) try a coat of shellac first. it is an excellent sealer as well and you can poly over it.

Thanks for helping me out on this. When I put it on It just soaked in and I didn't see any difference. Once again to both of you for your help.

White shellac as a sealer as orange stains the wood
