Last Weekend I was cleaning out my shop, and I found this Bass round blank. They are available at craft stores such as Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I thought I needed to do something with it. I found the pattern in an old book by Rick and Karen Longabaugh: 400 Full-Size Mini-Clocks. Cut with a Flying Dutchman UR1 blade. Finished with my BLO-mineral spirits mix, then top coated with semi gloss spray lacquer.
My question to you guys, Does the clock thing work, or should I not do them with the clock.

Awesome job there Dan, I like it. Thanks for posting. It gives me an idea. ;)

Very very nice DG. Like Russ, that gives me an idea.

Dan...I think they could go either way...lots of folks are 'owl' people and either with or without should sell at your show.
When I did my projects on the basswood 'rounds' I used the Danish Oil finish just to give the application a chance to help hold the bark in place.
Nice Job!

Thats a really good idea to do with the wood blank, very nice job on it too

Wow Dan really nice good work I like it.

Looks good to me Dan, and I think the clock just adds some functionality. Gives people a reason other than just "artistic" to put it on display. You could always have some of each for sale.
-
I think you did a Great job on this one and I can see the clock being there.
Hey....I didn't know Hobby Lobby or Michaels sold that kind of wood blanks.
Wow! I gonna go check out our later. Thanks for the info Dan.... Danny :+}

nice job Dan

Very nice Dan. I kind of like them with no clock. If others are like me, I have so many clocks now. Just my $.05.

I think the clock adds to the overall look. Make the eyes looking up at the "moon" for more interest.
Just my 2 cents worth......that's all I can afford. Nice job on the puiece.

Jim, Everything I am cutting these days are for the two shows I will be doing this year. Anything that does not get sold will end up as Christmas gifts!

The effect the bark gives is great.
Just a thought, if you know any wood cutters in your area, get in touch with them and see if they would cut some rounds for you. Chances are they will have stuff from dead wood and most of the shrinking and cracking will be done, if it's cut from green living trees it will take a while to dry.
Most turners will rough out bowls then store them till they are dry by which time they will know if it's junk or workable. About 6 months minimum more realistically a year or more. So they do lots so they can have a continuous supply, there are many discussions on how to dry this stuff properly so I'm not going there, search around you'll find lots of info.

Nice cutting Dan.
I like the clock insert - it looks good. On the other had I wouldn't buy one with a clock.
