Post by: JOHNNY on July 22, 2011, 12:34:00 am
I am looking for some really good ScrollSaw Blades. What blade is the best. I heard Flying Dutchman is the best. And what kind of blade blade does the best job. I use a #5 blade. Anyone that can help, Thank you.

Most of the scrollers like the FD blades, (I do too) the sizes used depend on what you are using them for. I like the 1's and 3's for fine work and 5's for more open curving cuts. Everyone has their own preferences.
Try several and make up your mind which you like best. I did.
Welcome to the forum and post yourself on the new members list so everyone can say hello.

Oh watch out for that guy Graybeard, and the other one Russ. They are tough and devious. LOL  ;D

Flying Dutchman or Olsen - that's up to you.

To stay with FD's:

- FD-Ur#1 for small, clean cuts (puzzle, jewelery, fretwork), works fine up to 3/4"!!
- FD-SR#1 to #7 depending on the wood - really nice!

- FD-HD#2 for preparing the pieces (I mostly use my Dozuki Hand saw for this).

I keep a supply of both flying dutchman and olson.  I like them both.  Sometimes one works better than the other depending on the wood and the project.  Never buy the blades from the hardware store.  They are way overpriced and the worst blades out there.

I'm not sure there is a "BEST" blade. It is all a matter of what you get used to and practice, practice, practice.
If you go to the home page of "Scrollsaw Workshop", there is a place called "Scrolling School" or something like that. It is a series of videos by Steve Good and the first two are about scrolling saw blades. Those videos will give you more information in 10 minutes of watching them than can possably be posted here in four days.
Just my $0.02 worth.

I agree with Roger I can't say that their is a Best blade out there but I use FD blades and if you wanna try the diff call mike and he will send you 2 blades to try out (after I did that I was sold) I will use nothing but FD blades now so give them a shot.

Ditto on the FD blades...call or email Mike and get his advice.
OR order the 'sample pack' of blades and make your own decision.
NOBODY knows more about blades than our Mike!

FD Mike will give you the best advice you can get on scroll blades, we don't have much choice down under Olsen and a few other crap blades that is why I import them from Mike, and his prices are hard to beat
