Title: Enough fabric or Friends
Post by: Gabby on July 06, 2011, 01:34:55 am
Well I've finally got all the cutting done on the Boss' Belated Birthday Gift over a month late already. Now to decide on whether to stain or not, and what backing to use. I'm thinking of stealing some of her fabric  and gluing it to the backer board.
I'm in deep stuff already might as well learn how to swim. LOL

There is a saying that goes:

"If they don't get it when they want it,
they'll want it when they get it!"   ;D

I'm a great believer in that!
Just in case no one remembers what I'm cutting for her, I've attached the pattern. I believe it's one from Grampa. Oh and it's 3/4" Oak.

Hi Marcel are you talking about the project, or the silly saying?
I included the pattern as it isn't photo read yet.

You could use anything you wish for the saying.
As in puppies or children if the don't get dinner when they want it etc..

I'm referring to the project.
I like to see pictures of the state it's in now so we can follow the progress.

It's perfect of course, would I dare anything less for the Boss?
Along with all the honey do's it'll probably be next month before it's done, I'm still working on her dog agility equipment namely the dog walk shown in the attached photo. Just have to brace the sawhorses it rests on so it's more stable. have finished replacing the hinges previously used to attach the ramps.
Designed and frabicated a type of hangar  instead. I got some flat stock about 1/8" by 1" by 10" and heated and rebent is so that the ends set flat against the wood while the center section is raised  so that 2 L shaped hooks can hook the 2 parts (ramp and walk trestle) together and also be taken down easily for moving as needed.
Enough of my briliant cobbleing together of assorted parts never intended to be used this way.   ;D ;D

Love the pattern. I quilt too, so I have a huge fabric stash myself. The pattern could easily be adapted into one of the oval keychains.

Be my guest LOL
All those little letters would drive me crazy, er uh crazier!
Bad enough as it was. I'm going to cut something totally different next project.

What do you think of a patchwork of fabric strips as a backer, I'm thinking that would enhance the idea?

I would just use the sewing machine outline for a key chain and leave out the letters! I'm not that good a cutter! I think strips of fabric would be a great idea. I'll have to try out the key chain. Whose pattern is it so I can credit them?

I think it is Grampa Paul's, at least that is what I've been telling everyone, I tried to go back through his posts to see if it was there, but chances are I missed it. I don't have the original any more after I changed it from a silhouette to a line drawing I removed the makers mark to save ink. Sorry!
If someone knows for sure speak up I think Dgman cut it too. I found Dan's post of the sewing machine, and asked him who drew it.
If you do make a key chain from it make the needle go all the way down or it will likely break off easily.

I like yours Dan but I'm going a different route finishing it, trying to keep it a bit smaller, only have just so much wall space to hang things, and pretty soon it'll all be photos and such so no frame.

OK folks I've posted the photo to the gallery, my wife loves it. so lets hear your thoughts.
I don't mean just "the nice cut or you did great" I appreciate real criticism and value it.
I finished it with just Minn Wax Tung oil without stain, I think it brought the grain out just right!

Ok Gabby I personally think you did a great job.. The cuts are clean, the finish makes the grain in the wood pop, the material as the backer sets off the over all design.. I'm sorry my friend I can find no fault in something so lovingly made.. Sheila in Tx

Gabby, if I say "nice cut, you did great" that means I took the time not only to look at the project, but that I also cared enough to make a comment to show support for you.   The time you donated and the love behind it does not show, but plays the biggest part in the cutting.  You did a wonderful job on the letters .. better than I could have done for sure.  The fabric adds a different element than any of the other projects made from the same pattern that are in the gallery   You should be proud of yourself ... SO ... nice cut, you did great ... ;D ;D

I think you did an excellent job on the cutting and I like the backing. I do think the grain needs to be brought out a little more since you used solid Oak, but it looks fine as is. Over all you did an excellent job!

Thank you all, for your well thought out comments. I just get so used to seeing the same old, same old comments when someone posts to the brag section.
I often refrain from commenting because I don't want to be thought of as some kind of "expert"
even though these old eyes see flaws. I don't want to be a smart a$$.
I do appreciate constructive criticism, as this is a learning process. It is often a case of being too close to the trees to See the forest.

Sorry, but you did leave yourself wide open !!!!

Ok Ol' Timer...

here goes:
Good Pattern and selection of wood
Fabric strips in the background are a very interesting touch
Well cut out and assembled

Personal Opinion:
I would have stopped the fabric strips above the lettering and used a solid color to back the lettering, the mixture tends to make it somewhat hard to read 'in the photo'...in person it might be OK

So There!!

LOL! GB I like that.
Trying to put another piece across the letters would take some doing, I had a hard enough time getting the strips in place. I have some other options for attaching the fabric if I do any more of them, (it's possible, the wife said the quilting ladies might ask for some).
The camera flash lighted up the letters in the photo but under normal lighting the 3/4" wood makes it look black due to the shadow, If it's cut from thinner stock that will probably be necessary. Thanks for pointing it out.
