what works good on bringing the grain out on maple?  Have used tung oil and lemon oil and wasn't to impressed...will be used on a hand saw blade that steve designed.

Try some stain on a scrap, I used Beverley's stain on a rifle stock and just wiped it on and immediatly wiped it off and it brought the grain out beautifully without muddying things up, test on several scraps to see the results. It has to go on before you oil or finish.
