Hej!
That's it - my saw just broke down. The engine burnt and it's now running at half power with this significant smell and some electrical cracking (if you know what I mean). That's a death sentence for sure.
I was just working on my globo-idea (http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=4832.0). I cut a 3/8" (9mm) birch plywood with a fd#5, no big deal.
So I think I might need a new one: 220V / low vibration / speed control. Suggestions?

what brand/type of saw do you have?
are you sure its the engine you smell and not a burned circuit or conductor?
does your saw has an engine with carbon brushes or is it an induction engine?
if the brushes are burned out you sometimes can replace new ones.
but most saw have induction engines and than the change is great you burned out the windings inside.
if so you probably need a new engine.
sometimes after the whole thing cooled down the rotor/anker will get stuck for good.
be careful if you keep trying you might get a fire!
dissemble the engine and look at the damage on the rotor. maybe you can buy just a new part?
depending on the brand you can look here for spare parts:

thanks Marcel. It's the engine. I figured it out right away.
My saw was a small one from Guede. Not worth investing much.

Sounds like it's time to buy a new toy.... I mean saw! ;D
-
yes - it's time. Right now I see it more as a chance to upgrade than to argue about the broken machine.
And I figured out, that converters for running 110V machines on European 220V are not expensive at all (http://www.torsten-harms.de/fun/a020.gif) So I might even get an American model (of a saw ;D ).
EDIT: OK, I might have a budget for a Hegner* ;D
As I had no saw this afternoon I sat down in the living room to watch some TV (a.k.a. float my brain with nonsense). My wife didn't like that and made a incautious comment to buy a really good saw ;D Fine to me, I already thought about selling my kite stuff (not enough time for that aside of scrolling! / getting to old to torture my bones).
*Also I now can watch out for these I still think they are way too pricey. I might look for a used one.

on ebay in germany you have plenty used ones for sale.
http://shop.ebay.de/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Hegner+Dekupiers%C3%A4ge&_sacat=See-All-Categories (http://shop.ebay.de/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Hegner+Dekupiers%C3%A4ge&_sacat=See-All-Categories)
good luck with it.

Sorry to hear about your saw, I have a German Scheppach otherwise known as a Deco405, Table swings L/R 45degrees, on a very accurate scale, 16" throat Variable speed from 500-1500rpm. light and puffer. I broke the bottom clamp (my fault), rang them up, they explained that they didn't have any in stock at the moment but would put me on a list. the next day, postman dropped one through the letter box with a note saying they had vandalise a new machine for me. All free of charge. the machine price is sort of middle book. ?240 English and that included our rip of VAT Tax and delivery.
Food for thought Have a look
iggy

That Scheppach looks a whole lot like the Craftsman I used to have. As well as being almost identical to the Hitachi CW40 and the Porter Cable now sold by Lowes.
The very likely come out of the same factory!

yeah, those are all produced in China. I'm currently not decided at all.
I will definitely take a look at the ebay offers - thx Marcel.
I already missed one sold for 220Euro (315$) (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120738224065). Others have totally overrated ideas about the price (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250832733536) (790$).
I read about the Hegner saws. Those are supposed to be nearly vibration free and work fine.
American saws are also a option - unless the shipping is not valued at around 100$ :-\

I think the one for $760 is a bit high. I think it's a really old model because the on/off switch is orange and on the site http://www.hegner.eu/ (http://www.hegner.eu/) you cabn see their black now days. or http://www.hegner.ch/framesetde.htm (http://www.hegner.ch/framesetde.htm)
so be carefully not to buy a piece of junk.
I would try to get a multicut SE. it has variable speed and I like that!
in Holland there is a site with used stuff and there is a Hegner highest ? 270,-- bid !!! (http://doe-het-zelf-verbouw.marktplaats.nl/machines-zaagmachines/452625496-tk-elektrische-figuurzaag-hegner-multicut-2s-e-1999.html?return=eJwtjEEKwjAQRe8itMs2sVgwJUhdewJ3oYkmNE2GzBRF8e5O0dV%2F7%2F9hjJLqHZQYUMleqB06UyY%2FeCJQbTtncKlZTJkJojGETYrt76QBD6dn1LK2qClX3Sir7mwDA2ckzlcARrxZ%2FK%2BwtYJh4WFM6%2BJKmFjnB6t39%2BQKW8btyb4GWLWoISNN2TrdHw%2Fyct0Nny9LhTjG&df=1&fta=eNo1jktuwyAURffCwGPAdgIPeQdVF9CJ9fjYQcU2MjixGmXvhX5m597BuRfhCs8EAsixh%2FGOIRFVYgfkDANrbBryBkxZDypk%2BPJRpcmm0sQMVC0R1mNxuzfq8wE3N69uV1vywJsYj4E2cUvZbNYNF9mzt4%2FqLuqIsyPKF0uCFoi3v6MUSKtRIG%2B7k%2BleGOyuFajV3BTgTDgnT4YTiq4XBfTFoqkgBMp2OpnEiQnsCwhNHdrqZWUibxFtGoNb53z7n5ZAFjzH%2BqYcsD8dB4IPot7%2F8E4UAoXn6%2FUN41JcvQ%3D%3D&fta_ind=5&fs=1)
don't know how far you life from the duct border?
good luck

Ex Caliber, nice saw and worth the investment

don't know how far you life from the duct border?
Well - I'm living in the suburbans of Munich ;D
I'm up in the north in August (Jever/Wilhelshaven/Bremen), but I doubt I'd have space in the car for a saw.
But it's a good idea to check the local market, I'll figure that out too.

Got one! clickedy (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320713534264)
really rarely used, 10 years old. I will need an additional excenter for the blade tension.

Good news! that didn't take too long.
-
great for you, congrats!
now you cabn go back to sawing!
-
Looks like a great saw, Congratulations!
-
Way to GO!
Get back to cuttin' quickly!
~~~GB~~~
-
I hope to have it here mid of next week. I'll have to change the blade clamps and mount an excenter.
I think I can use the clamps of my current broken saw and I have some quick releases for bicycles, those should do the job.
tip: I use the quick level (http://www.mikesworkshop.com/newprod.htm) in my blade clamp from FD mike.
works great!
(http://www.mikesworkshop.com/quick.gif)
-
that one is mounted on the blade holder right?
-
that one is mounted on the blade holder right?
yeah on the top blade clamp (see picture)
I have this one on the bottom:
-
ah ok, I will keep that in mind.
I'll try first if the clamps from my current saw are compatible with the Hegner.
I have some that are nice to use (will make photos).
-
Marcellarius: did you say FD Mike has a guick change connector that could be put on a saw? I am reduced to using pliars to loosen my blades ...
yes Tom, get out the original screw of the clamp and put Mike's quick level in.
works great for me, even better than the original hegner clamp with the big aluminum knob.
click here (http://www.mikesworkshop.com/newprod.htm) and you see them
Thanks I will definitely check them out
My new saw is scheduled for today - I can't hardly wait! I have to work 2 more hours before I'll get home.
I'm supposed to fetch the kids tonight (playing at grandparents house) - but I think I'll head home first to check if the saw arrived. I suppose the old lady living next door to accept the package as usual.
*pfff* still 115 minutes until knocking-off ;D
-
If the saw arrived, I hope he remembered to gather the kids!
-
;D hardly...
It was a bit complicated to get the saw: The postman only dropped a note, so I had to fetch the saw from the post. Here in Germany most post offices have been closed and only small postal agencies have taken over. Those are a pain in the a** >:( Always a pleasure to deal with green people who even don't know how the word service is spelled. I intend to drive whenever its possible to the next town where a post office with post officers is still located. That's much simpler - and might sometimes even save me some time.
Anyway: I stood in line at the postal agency (in a supermarket) to wait for that woman working in the scope of her possibilities - when the electricity failed. The complete supermarket went dark. That was the moment the woman at the counter stopped working and waited for the end of the world, but as I could already see my package behind the counter, I forced her to give it to me. I had to wait another 15 minutes, in which the woman made some mental preparation on the handover and the electricity and the internet connection was back to work.
What an adventure.
Now the Hegner:
The saw is near perfect! 10 years old, hardly used. Definitely not an experienced user as I spotted and threw away some home depot's scroll blades. Only the connector for the vaccum is broken. But that's no big deal, as I'm not willing to use a vaccum while cutting anyway.
I already mounted a bicycle's front quick release to the backside of the saw. Works perfect!
The blade clamps from my old saw are not fitting the Hegner. So I ordered some clamps with knob.
The bellows for the dust blower is dismounted as I'm using already a fish tank pump. I ordered some tubings for the dust blower, so that I can get the dust blown away from me. For those, who are searching: check out the Loc-Line (http://www.loc-line.de/) System. You can get it at amazon ( clickedy (http://www.amazon.com/Loc-Line-40413-hose-Line-System/dp/B00065UG7Q) ) and other places. It's original designed for coolant on router systems and fits our needs perfectly.
That's it for now, I still have to make it "my saw" but will be scrolling this weekend, that's for sure.
I will show some pictures when I've setup the stuff.
