A day to make the checkerboard and get it ready to cut then another day to cut and glue and then a 3rd day to sand and finish. So right around 3 days.

I'm surprised you made it so quick. How about a tutorial on making one like that, just looking at it doesn't give any clues???

There are several steps to making the blank used for this bowl.
The 1st step you take and cut 3/4 in strips from 3/4 in stock out of both the oak and the purpleheart and then glue them together so that they alternate oak then purpleheart.
The 2nd step is after the glue dries and you have leveled the blank you need to cut 3/4 in strips across the blank you just glued up. You will have some thing that will have oak then purpleheart then oak then purpleheart etc.
the 3rd step is to flip every other strip so that you get a checker board effect and glue that together. You should have a blank ,when done ,that is slightly longer than it is wide.
I put a layer of blue painters tape on the surface after I leveled and smoothed it out.
The pattern was a simple Octagon ( 8 sided ) that I stretched to fit the blank. The rings are 3/8 in thick, so with the blank you are cutting being 3/4 in thick you will need to put your saw table left side down and at a 26.6 degree angle ( provided you can set that accurately if not 27 degrees is fine )
The rest of the steps are pretty standard and if you have Carol Rothman's book " Bowls from the Scroll Saw" the procedures are very similar to the ones she introduces.
Then it is just a matter of taking a 1/16 drill and drilling the entry holes for the rings and then cutting them with a #7 blade. and then the fun part of gluing up the rings and the really hard part making sure that the different sections match when glued up but if you take your time you will get a great looking bowl.
