Title: Finishing Question...
Post by: TripleB on May 18, 2011, 10:38:37 pm
I normally don't stain my projects, but on this particular project I am using a dark stain, I usually just do a 50/50 mix of BLO and Mineral Spirits. So my question is... After staining, is it still necessary to do the Blo/MS step? I will be spraying with lacquer to finish off the project.

TIA

Bob

PS. It's an oil based stain.

I don't oil anything that I stain, I just use a top coat of laquer or poly or something.

Thanks Katie, that is what my gut feeling was, especially since it's an oil based stain. And coming from you, just solidifies my gut.

But I would still love to hear other opinions, this also raises the question, what if it was a water based stain? To me it seems like a water based stain would benefit from a little oil before a hard finish is applied, but thats just a thought.

Hey Bob, The reason to use oil is to bring out the natural color and grain of the wood without staining. So it is not necessary to oil if it is stained. But you do want to top coat.

I would worry a bit about the water based stain not mixing well with the oil.
