Yet another wonderful Sheila Landry pattern. Poplar frame, segmented hummer and flowers are maple. Backer is 1/8 BB ply. Segmentation cut with FD-SR 2/0. Frame cut with FD-UR #5. Stain is Minwax waterbased, mixed to desired colors. Coated with satin spray acrylic. Mother's Day present. She loved it!

Can you explain what "segmentation" is?
Thanks for sharing.

Can you explain what "segmentation" is?
I'm definitely no expert, but here goes:
Segmentation is kind of like "beginners intarsia", except that with intarsia, many of the pieces are cut from different pieces/types of wood to control color and grain, where with segmentation, the pieces are all cut from the same piece of wood, resulting in the grain running in the same direction for every piece, and before staining, the pieces are all the same color. Once the pieces are cut, they are shaped (if desired). In my case I used my dremel with the flex shaft and a small fine grit sanding drum. Some of the pieces were very small (i.e. wing/tail feathers and flower centers) and were very hard to hold and sand, but I got through it without sanding off too much of my thumbnail! Once the pieces are shaped and stained, they are glued to a veneer backer to hold them all together. I hope this explains things without clouding it up too bad! ;)
Thanks again everyone for the nice comments!

Here's a great trick for sanding those tiny pieces -
I use a strong double sided carpet tape and a block of wood. I stick the piece to be sanded on the block of wood and sand it like that. I also use craft sticks (popsicle sticks) in the same way. That way I still have skin left on the tip of my fingers by the time I am done.
The tape is pretty strong and usually holds the pieces very well. :)
Give it a try next time!!

Again, Thank You everyone!

MW, Its rare to see a frame that should not have a picture in it, this is one of those times. That frame is so nice all by itself that any picture put in it would not do it justice, maybe a mirror or nothing would be a great option! Excellent work!

Nice work.
Looks great

This is truly a beautiful piece. I especially love the detail of the hummingbird. You did a fantastic job and you should be very proud...I would be!

Thanks guys!
Triple B, I can't take much credit, the design is all Sheila's. I've made several of Sheila's patterns, as most everything I make is a gift, and almost all of Sheila's patterns are the type things the women in my life just love, so shopping at Sheila's site makes my gift selection pretty easy! (Thank you once again Sheila!!!)

That's one of the nicest pieces I have seen in a while. Everything about this is perfect. Glad I got to see it.

Thank you Steve! And again, a "Thanks" to everyone else as well. You all probably don't realize how much it means to someone like me, who's only been doing this since September, to read your words of praise for the work we've done.
THANK YOU!!!!!

Looks absolutely great. If this is your first one, I can't wait to see what you get up to later. You might give Al here a run for his money.
