Title: Layered Flower
Post by: mrsn on March 08, 2011, 10:16:26 pm
After I made my recent "Layered Butterfly"  I wanted to try the concept on a different pattern. I looked through my collection and decided on this flower. The sizes of the layers are different then the butterfly, and I am not sure if I like it as well. It was kind of fun to try something really different with a pattern.
What do you think?

I think your having fun with the "layering" technique, and it shows in your work. It looks really good.
Wondering how it would look if each "layer" was a different type of wood, or is that getting to crazy... ;D

I was thinking of staining each of the layers a different color, but chickened out. I was worried that it would look too busy and the flower would get lost. I think I will try staining on my next one.

I like it.  Instead of stain wonder what different species of wood would do for the over all effect.  As long as the coloration of the wood was not too drastic I think it might be ok.  Thanks for showing us your work.

Your scroll work is great, my initial thought of the pieces as a whole was, I like it but its missing something, it's a bit difficult to pick up on the layering, maybe staining one or two of the pieces will help make the layers pop. I really like the concept and it has lots of potential. But then again, maybe the layers just don't show that well in the pictures. I hope to one day be as skilled on the scroll saw as you are, you're fret work is beautiful.

I love it Katie!  This is a great concept!  If you were going to stain it, I would stick with one color.  I think that it gives the piece continuity.  This is just my preference though.  I like the simplicity of it.  I think that is part of the appeal of it.  If there was a lot more going on in it, it would look very busy.  This looks clean and on purpose.  I do really like it a lot!  You did a wonderful job!

This one is just as cool at the butterfly, Katie.  I think multi-colors would take away from an already interesting piece.

Very cool!
As far as staining goes, I would stick with as few colors as possible, like maybe just two, or even just one as Sheila suggested.  I like DW's idea as well.  Either way, I think some color would definitely add some depth to the project as long as there aren't drastic differences between the colors.  So many different ways to go with this!  Just my extremely amateur opinion! :-\

Katie, interesting and unique, I also say stick with one color, layering is one concept I never thought of and it is something I would like to try.

really beautiful!

I'm with Judy - this has to be a series....

But I think smoothly different colors can give it a depth - just some kind of different gradients would be interesting to try.

Very nice, Me well not stain the wood that wood add too much colour and detract from the Flower, now color the Flower Like colored paper at the back, or mybe copper.

My 1.5 cents worth.
I have ordered that book and hope to have it in a day or two.

Nice work Katie.  I agree with what the others are saying about staining...I wouldn't have too much variation with the coloring of the layers.
