Title: Do you believe this .....
Post by: GrayBeard on March 02, 2011, 09:19:58 pm
? Wed Mar 2, 8:24 am ET
ATHERTON, Calif. ? A California school teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after he rattled a table to get the attention of his math students, startling an eighth-grade girl who used her cell phone to call police.
Atherton police Sgt. Tim Lynch tells the Palo Alto Daily News that officers went to Selby Lane School Tuesday afternoon because of reports a teacher was causing a disturbance.
Officers found a calm teacher with class in session.
The sergeant says the teacher's table-rattling startled a student and she used her cell phone to call 911. He says other students in the class weren't bothered by the teacher's actions.
Redwood City School District deputy superintendent John Baker says the teacher was placed on leave because there was a police response.

What the heck has the education system come to?

Unreal. Being a teacher in today's schools is one job I just would not want.

My teachers would be in Jail if they had this girl in their class, I see nothing wrong with what the teacher did I used to sleep in class all the time and my teachers would Slam books throw eraser pencils pens all kind of stuff at you till you woke up, I fell this little girl should have gotten in trouble not him.

Because kids are always right and the adult is always wrong and we wonder why our country is going to sh!t.  We cant hurt their feelings, we cant cuss at them, we cant make them feel bad, there can be no losers, we have to lower the standard if they all cant meet it.  My son is 19 and wouldnt listen to my wife and me.  He knew better than we did and he did what he wanted.  Well he thought he would stay in CA when we moved up to WA and live a great life since he wasnt under our roof.  Well he lost his  license, has a $1000 fine to the courts, does not have steady income, and cant join the Navy until he pays off his fines.  He finally got smart and quit partying with his friends all the time and starting taking our advice.
Kids are in for a rude awakening, you work for me I dont care about your feelings, I dont care if you get scared or offended.  I care that you do your job and do it well.  In the real world there are losers.

And why the heck are students allowed to have their phones on in class?

Some questions...

1. What the hell was she doing with a cellphone in class?

2. Why did SHE feel so damned superior that SHE called the cops?

3. Why did the School Board suspend someone who was doing his job?

4. When did the American school system who are supposed to represent US turn into such a bunch of WIMPS?

Sorry folks, the Brothers of Mary who taught at my school would not have 'rattled' a desk...they would have smacked us in the head and screamed,
"Are you paying attention NOW?"

I just cannot understand the whole concept of today's educational system?!?!?!?!?!?

You're right, Cherie!

Since when did the damn kids take over and make the parents subservient?

Sorry folks but if one of mine had done this they would be severely but not PHYSICALLY punished!

What a slap in the face of the teaching community!
Since when can they NOT control the classroom?

Too damn much Political Correctness and legal Kissing of Posteriors!

I just watched a video of a kid who thinks it's wrong that his boss expects him to show up to work on time and to do things the way he wants it done.  He feels that the workers should stand together and take over the business.  The mind set of kids now days is scary.

Well we're all probably going to get in trouble for this "Political discussion". But I'm going to weigh in anyway. I'm tired of "Political Correctness".
We are rapidly becoming a "Nanny State" where we will be told everything we are "Allowed" to say or do. I just saw on the news that they now have a "reading" program for grade school kids that is corrupting our constitution. Check it out for yourselves. I saw the brat claiming they should organize to take over the Noodle store from the owner founder. Because he insisted they show up for work at a specified time, and told THEM how to cook HIS noodles. The nerve of this guy thinking that since he founded and built HIS business that he could tell the employees how to do the work. Shame on him!        Sarcasm intended!!!!!!
How about we Unionize the military, then the recruits could tell those in charge how to do their job, even though they don't have a clue what is required. We're on strike and aren't going to protect our country until we get our raise.
Wake up America, we are loosing it.
My humble opinion.

Welcome aboard Gabby.  Kids these days have no respect for their elders.  When I was growing up, just as many of us, I was punished for back mouthing, not doing what I was told, ect....everything else a kid got into trouble over.  There was a time that one of my kids kept threatening to call 911 if I did not lay off him...one day it happened...Dustin got his ass chewed by the police officer for making a fake 911 call.   LMAO.  I guess it all depends on who your talking that matters.  The only thing I did, was tell Dustin that he had to do his chores or he was grounded.  I very rarely every spanked my kids...unless they really needed it.

Thanks Cherie, I appreciate the support. I guess what really set me of was the school arbitrarily sent the teacher home, just because a little twit decided to call the police as if it was a foregone conclusion that the teacher was at fault. With their hands tied there will be anarchy in the class rooms. I've been a police man and a school bus driver (among other things) and the driving job was probably the most stressful of the 2.

My2C,

1. We're becoming too soft.  No one can handle being yelled at, pointed at or told that they are wrong.

2.  We're becoming too selfish.  No one is willing to do anything if it doesn't benefit themselves.

3.  We're becoming too spoiled.  Everyone expects others to help them when they're perfectly capable of helping themselves.

4.  We're becoming too greedy.  Everyone wants to have a huge flatscreen tv, sports car, 3,500 square foot home, and  all the latest electronic gadgets.  All our ancestors worked simply toward survival, not to have the latest and greatest.

5.  We've completely forgotten what is truly important to life.  Air, Shelter, Water, Food and Love!  Nothing else is necessary.

Okay, stepping off my soapbox now.  Time to go saw something!

the school my kids go to has a policy that if you get caught using a cellphone during class time it a 3 day suppension the first time, 7 days the second time and two weeks the third time.
parents are giving their kids cell phones way before they are responsible enough to use one.  i made all my kids wait until they turned 16 and they had to have a part time job to help pay for thier phone.  if they quit their job  i took away the phone.

i cant believe the school would suspend this teacher.  they should suspend the student for disrupting the class

just my nickles worth (2 cents just doenst go far today)

Thanks Gabby for your response.  I could say a mouth full too,but .....We must watch the same news outlet..
Kendall, bravo to you..
The problem is things are going to get worse before they get better.
The reason I love the saw so much is it can "take me away" for a period of time.

I agree with all that is being said here and I spoke before but I am going to chime in again.
My 16 yo newphew was telling me the "STRESS" he is under at school so I asked him what kind he told me the Teachers they make the students life stressful because they (GET THIS) Make them write things down from the chalkboard, they have to figure out thing's in their heads like math, they have to know how to spell or they get docked points on their work and the best thing they have to write in cursive and NO CELL Phones allowed in class cause they may use it to get the answers from their friends.
Dang Here I thought all this time that was going to school wow You see people we were taught very wrong all this time. I say the Country started to fall when they put Child protective service in charge of making the rules now don't get me wrong there is a fine line and way to many cross it and we need them to do something but come on. We can't tell our kids no because we may hurt their feelings or ground them because they did wrong...

I remember the day I called my Mother a B***h I belive I said Your such a Bitthats all I remember getting out before I got the back hand from nowhere Nowadays these call the Parents that and much worse. and we have to stand their and say yes child your right I am sorry.......Yeah Not in my house I am a father of 5 children and 4 step children Grandpa to 5 grandkids (so far) and I will be ummm Danged if I will allow them to do what they want when they want. If anyoof you have seen the show Parenthood on NBC I am so that dad I say Don't spare the rod use on that kids Backside that way they will know what we as parents mean when we say NO!

My 90 YO aunt was a teacher for years, and was once assigned an unruly class that no other teacher wanted.  On the first day, she walked in, laid a 2' paddle on her desk, and introduced herself.  Didn't have to tell the kids what the paddle was for... they knew.  Says she never had a lick of trouble with them.

My big fear while in school wasn't of the teachers, although I did respect them, it was that they would tell my Dad whatever I had done, and he'd take care of it.  That's one of the big problems today I believe.  The parents aren't backing the teachers, aren't truly parenting at home.  It's nice that they believe their child and support him/her, but they're being very naive when they do.

I teach mostly middle school, and my kids are usually great. (although I think they somehow knew that I wanted to write about how great my students are and made me think twice about it today, lol)

This post got me thinking about how many cell phones and such they have on them so I decided to take a survey of my high school kids. I have one small high school class with a range of sudents freshman through seinors, 15-18 years old. This semester all 14 of my students are male. I teach in a fairly rural, small town in Wisconsin. 3 of my students do farm chores before coming to school, 1 more does them after school. 6 of my students have part time jobs. Of my 5 seniors 4 are going to college next year. Generally a nice group of kids.
So with 14 kids, how many cellphones and/or mp3 players were in the room this morning?

19.....2 kids didn't have any, and several had 2 devices. 1 kid even had 3, but he goes against the rule of "generally nice kid".

Hey GB,
I'm new to the forum but not to teaching. I've probably seen it all after 40 years in the classroom. I am middle school math teacher and fight the cell phones ringing on an ongoing basis. There are days that I long to back to the 70's when the kids came to learn and I was was allowed to teach. Like mrsn I teach in a rural community ( not quite as rural as her ). The cell phone has become part of the students clothing routine.

Our governor here in Wisconsin (who I voted for) at a time when all this is going on is trying to lower the teachers pay and trying to outlaw union representation, so on top of all that is said here even more will go to the private sector and leave our children/grandchildren with fewer teachers.

Sorry Gabby, I think our governor is taking away pay and benefits and trying to eliminate unions which will cause teachers to go into the private sector ie. computers and math especially, at a time when we need better - qualified teachers not fewer

My understanding of the situation, and I may be wrong.
Is the benefits are so expensive that they are bankrupting the state and corporations. Which is happening all across the country and not just the teachers. The strangle hold created by tenure which makes it impossible in many places to fire those who are doing a mediocre job is forceing the hiring of more people in order to make up for those not doing their jobs. What ever become of competition in the work place? This country was built on competition, not complacency! Through out my working life I knew that if I wasn't up to the job I would be replaced which made me try and do my best. I don't see how we can expect less than that of anyone, without producing shody products at greater expense. I believe my analogy fits no matter what line of work is being done.
Respectfully to all,
Gabby

Thers really no such thing as a bad kid, just bad parenting.  Parents are not raisingtheir kids anymore.  I am somewhat guilty of this myself.  We dont spend enough time with our kids, and watching TV doesnt count.

OK, I think we need to take this conversation to a "real" coffee shop.We do not need to be taking pay and benefits away from teachers when we're having a hard time hiring and keeping the ones we have. Yes it is unfortunate that there are teachers out there that chose the wrong profession, and by all means if we had better parents we'd have better students which would make it easier on the teaching situation. That having been said - it seems the first place everyone always wants to cut taxes is education. I think it was JFK that said "You can't progress as a nation until you can progress in education". Does anyone think this nation is "progressing" in education? You name the place I'll buy the coffee.

That would be great except for the logistics. I'm afraid this is the only coffee shop we all can get to. Besides if everyone showed up you would be bankrupt with coffee over a buck a cup.
Do any remember when coffee was a nickle and donuts 10 cents, pie a quarter? I do!
I'm very happy to see everyone keeping our responses civil even though we might not agree. I'm really saddened by what I see on the news. Not everyone is as respectful of the other guy's rights or opinion as this group. I hope we keep it that way.
We all need to keep an open and discerning mind in order to evaluate what is going on around us, much of which contains quite a bit of slight of hand used by those who would misrepresent their goals. I'm not pointing to just one faction, we have to use our brains for something other than to keep our ears from bumping into each other. We need to study what the results of their actions will lead to no matter who they are.
Respectfully,
Gabby

I prefer to keep my politics and sawdust separate.

The political situation is complicated, there are as many "fake facts" as there are real ones, and it can be hard to tell them apart. I don't expect that everyone has to agree, and I am sure you can guess what side of things I am on.

With the cuts and things happening, I will need another job next year. My teaching job will not support my family. I know several families that are two teacher households who are looking for new houses, the hit to their income will make them loose their homes.

It is a scary/depressing time to be a teacher.

I agree it is best to keep politics away from this group as well as religion. I can always see each side of things and respect the other view. But so many do not, and that is the sad part to me.

Just remember folks this is the USA, where freedom of speach is guaranteed at least for a little while longer. Any of us have the right to comment or not, as long as they don't become abusive. Thankfully we are not forced to listen as yet. So we can decide to ignore anything said by others. Or join in, our choice.
If our discussion here clarifies something for someone else, I believe that is a good thing!
This venue (The Coffee Shop) was placed here for other subject matter than just scroll sawing.

Hummm just think those kids could be in college and out before they were middle aged, and leading a productive life much earlier. Say 3 years! 12 X 3=36 months college grads by age 18 or so, they would also learn that life after school doesn't give them 3 months vacation every year to goof off and play.
Orriginally school terms were limited to 9 months so that the children could help with farm chores so mom and dad could get the planting and harvesting done. Now it's really no longer needed as very few of our population are farmers. I saw the percentage but don't recall the exact figures. Perhaps someone with more time on their hands than I have could furnish those figures.

A lot of this is why we chose to home school our kids. We as their parents wanted our influence on our kids. We did a good job according to their HS teachers. Well at least on the first 3. Bottom 3 still a work in progress. 8)

MrsN, I can tell you are a good teacher! You care about your job and the kids you teach, from what I have gathered in your comments on this whole forum.
Keep at it! :)

Parenting is 24/7! Some don't get it! Send their kid off to school to be baby sat, out of sight out of mind. "little johnny" is having trouble at school? Oh but he is my darling at home. That's the schools problem. Uhm...NO that means parental involvement and those really are horns under his red cape, not halo mounts!  ;D

Whew where did that soapbox come from?! ::) I'll step down now! :D

Good response Howard, just don't let up on those last three, it doesn't look like it's going to get any easier. Being a parent isn't just having a kid, any idiot can do that! Love isn't giving them every thing they want. It's giving them everything they need.
This is the lesson our government needs to learn as well.

Society as a whole is failing our kids.  I barely graduated highschool myself, I took the remedial English classes and barely passed them.  Now 19 years later I am responsible for writing sailors performance evaluations, I see some Officers that have 4 year college degrees and their writing is worse than mine.  Young adults cant even balance a check book nowadays.  I learned how to write checks and balance a check book in Math class in the 8th grade.  I have 25 year olds that cant do it.  Parents now a days are not parenting they do everything for there kids to protect them.  We are protecting our kids, I prefer pacifying, and not teaching them or preparing them for the real world.
I am proud of what I do and do my best to take care of my sailors, but there are times I am absolutley overwhelmed trying to deal with their personal problems when I have my own at home.  Grown men cant figure out how to pay bills or what they need to do to file their taxes.  How to register their car or where to get insurance.  In this age of the computer everything is at your finger tips and they cant find anything on their own.  They are so lazy they cant "google" something for the answer.  If my wife and I have another kid we are not gonna mess this one up, the other 3 its too late for.
At work my First Class came up with the rule that if you are late you are responsible for taking the trash out everyday until someone else is late.  We had problems with people being late on a regular basis.  Well one guy showed up late and he was taking out trash for a month before someone else was late.  It proved to be very effective and instead of having someone late everyday we now have some one late once a month.  I can handle that.
