A friend of mine just got a wood lathe, and wants to make some bowls. He was asking me today, should I cut the inside out first, or should I cut the outside shape first. I told him I knew just the guy to ask. Jimbo, I was hoping you could give me an answer.

Generally you start with base of the bowl to get the shape that you want and also to put a foot on to to remove the center.
BUT the best option for him is to get some lessons from an instructor on the basics of woodturning and also sharpening his gouges this is a very important part of this craft with out correctly sharpened tool you are wasting your time
Hope this of some help

Thanks for the answer Jimbo. I did tell him today he should buy a book. I will pass it on to him. Thanks again.
