Has anyone ever tried masking tape in place of blue painters tape, I've noticed it's cheaper but wonder if the glue will stick as good as it does to the painters tape?

Masking tape is harder to get off of the work piece. The longer it sits, the harder it is to remove.
-
The adhesive is much more agressive and will leave a mess if left on for more than an hour or two.
AND, as mentioned, the longer it sit the worse will be the removal.
"Drafting Tape" might be OK but I will not try it!

I seem to recall someone talking about using masking tape, cutting, then destroying their fretwork when they tried to remove the tape.

I get my masking tape from the $$ shop and have no problems, use it mainly for stack cutting

Painters tape can be expensive so many do-it-yourself painters prefer to use masking tape instead. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, depending on what you're painting and what kind of paint you're painting with. Both tapes come in a variety of sizes. Price is the primary difference, but there are other considerations, like residue, ability to withstand application of paint and effect of oil versus water based paint.
Advantages of Masking Tape:
Price. Masking tape is definitely cheaper.
Leaves clean Lines.
Available in many stores.
Great option for painting window frames as it comes off of glass cleanly.
Good for painting on canvas.
Disadvantages of Masking Tape:
Leaves sticky, hard to clean residue.
Must be removed quickly-within hours of applying so it comes off cleanly.
Paint may stick to the surface, causing paint to peel up when tape is removed.
Water-based paint can cause tape to buckle or pucker letting paint seep onto surface below.
Oil-based paint will degrade masking tape more quickly, seeping through the surface.
Advantages of Painters Tape:
Designed for painting and doesn't pucker or buckle when paint is applied
Leaves clean lines.
Available in many stores.
May be left over several days and still come off cleanly.
Disadvantage of Painters Tape:
Price. Painters tape is more expensive than masking tape.

I always used the package tape. I never put it on the wood always on the pattern. You have to make sure that it is tight on the pattern so saw dust will not get in between. They say that painters tape is easier to remove when on the wood.
I never painted my projects.

1. Blue painters tape. (only Scotch will do) (The 2 incher and the price does not bother me)
2. Adhere the pattern.
3. Packing tape to keep the blade from burning the wood and lubrication.
I have tried just adhering to the wood, but then it takes to long to get the paper off, never tried masking tape, but what experience I have had with it, is not very good.

I have bought the painters tape at the dollar store, I perfer that over masking tape, also I would pay more for it, just for the satisfaction of keeping my BP down, have ruined some projects with masking tape. Just my 2 cents. edward

I often use masking tape under my patterns. I find that I have a fairly long window of removal time with it, I can start a project one weekend and take the tape off next weekend if it takes a while to finish.
I don't do too many really delicate projcets, so it might be an issue with small fretwork pieces.

I use the blue painters tape. If I use the packing tape over it, I put it on before the pattern. Cuts down on the glare.

I use spray adhesive (very lightly) on the back of my patterns, then packing - clear- tape over that. If it is too tight when I am through, I just use the hair dryer to loosen it.

You can all so buy low tack masking tape that peels off easy
