Post by: boxmaker on November 10, 2010, 07:59:22 pm
Today, I picked out my wood, and glued on my pattern and drilled the holes. Tomorrow I will cut it out for   :-X, and finish it then ship it out. Is everyone still as excited as me.

Mine is already cut. Just waiting for an address conformation. It is going out of country and can not make sense of the address!
Of course I'm not saying which country it's going to!

I still haven't decided what to cut.  I have it narrowed down to about 4, but just can't decide.  I guess I'll cut all 4 and send whichever one I like best.

I haven't started the cutting yet.  I've been reviewing different patterns and considering creating others.  I have some cocobolo in thin planks that should make beautiful ornaments, so I'll probably use that.  Mine is leaving the country as well.

Julie I have the same problem, but narrowed down to two, and I think the rules say to mail only one. Decisions, Decisions.

Got mine just about ready to go.  One question...This is not like a Secret is it?  I mean we are supposed to put our names on them right??

Judy, You have to have your name and address on the return address of the package, so I guess you can't be anonymous.
When I send my package out I plan on adding a letter of who I am, and a description of the ornament.

I'm  moving my saw from the garage (burrr) to the basement so I will try working on it next week. Anyone want to give me a hand so I don't have to separate saw from table :) - Pete

I made the pattern and start later today or tomorrow with sawing.
I'm not sure of the wood I will use.

don't know if I would take 1/2"or 1/4" wood.
will I use plywood or real wood?

I don't know if I may ask this but,

what kind of wood and how thick did you all use?

I still haven't decided on the pattern, but I am making mine out of mesquite.  It is a native Texas wood, I figured if the ornament came from Texas - so should the wood.

Tell me about it.  Both of my kids have to have their gall bladder removed.  My son had his done in Dallas Thursday and my daughter is having hers done close to Christmas.  We have to wait for the beginning of her second tri-mester - she's pregnant.  To top it off, her husband was deployed last month and she has a 2 year old.  I've been bouncing between Dallas and New Mexico for a month and will continue to do so.  My cut list is long and I am spending 8 to 10 hours out in the shop every day that I am home.
My ornament is on today's list.  Do or die time.  I have to pick one.

Sounds like my life.
Our niece who is like a daughter (we have raised her) was pregnant and had Preeclampsia. They had to take the baby early. Both mother and baby are fine now. My wife has  been in and out of the hospital and doctors office. She has heart condition (Afib) and had an episode causing a small blood clot, causing a temporary stroke like condition. She is fine now, allot of continuing tests. She may have to start taking Coumadin a blood thinner.

On top of all that we have had four major appliances either quit or need repair.

All this is going on while I am trying to put a new roof on our home and run the Christmas Ornament Exchange.

I have not been able to be in the wood shop for weeks. I have picked out the pattern and will probably get it cut today or tomorrow.

"Do or die time" LOL.  8)

I'm glad to hear your neice and baby are doing better.  We've had the same major house issues too.  We lost one leg of our power - New 200 amp breaker.
Gas company came and dug up our front yard due to a minor gas leak.  Pool pump went out and had to have the entire underside of the house replumbed.  It's a 90 year old house.  The plumber said we had summer plumbing - summer going this way, summer going that way...

I'm almost ready with sawing.
my back is killing me, so I will finish sawing tomorrow

I liked the Idea from Julief for using native wood.
I'm not sure what kind of wood I used but I know this tree grew in Holland.
I doubt if it's larch or Yew, I think yew but have to ask the guy who gave it to me.

I am ready, my will go tomorrow on a long journey. One ornament is from spaltetd Beech. This piece of wood i found it in our woods for 3 years ago. We made as this time firewood. The wood is with fine, thin black and dark brown stripes. Look like zebrawood. It is finished with megilp / linseed oil.

I have cut mine tonight.  It is made of black cherry--from a tree in a woodlot about 75 miles from here.  My boss is clearing some trees from the woods on his property, and I am benefiting with free black cherry and walnut, as well as some maple.  Tomorrow, I will start to spray a finish on the ornament, and send it out by the weekend.

AAAAHHHG!!!!!! it's broken!!!!

I was sanding the ornament under a sanding disk on my drill press and the ornament was lanced as a frisbee at the wall.
broken in 7 pieces   :o :(  :'(
couple of hours work gone.
I'm a little depressed now, have to charge my "battery" and going to make it all over again....

well, I now know how to do it....  ::)

I can see it now, flying ornaments! I hope you learn from this Marcel! I always sand my wood blanks before I cut the piece. Then after it is cut, I sand off the fuzzies by hand. Also if you stack cut several layers, you will have more than one to work with!

One done and one to go!  My recipient will get one traditional ornament and one with a little Florida style and fun.  The traditional one is done but I spent today making routed bowls in Christmas designs for presents so the 2nd ornament will have to wait a few days.

You're right Dan, figured that out myself and yesterday I sawed a 1/2" piece from a log of yew and sand it down.
didn't had much time yesterday, was putting new paper at the wall at my daughters bedroom.
today I will start at the pattern again.

And maybe Heiko is right to, some people like puzzles. although I think I Will use the scrap to start a fire some day. ;D

AAAAHHHG!!!!!! #2 is broken to!!!!

after cutting and sanding I did some finishing with tung oil.
hanging it on a line to dry it fell of, 4 pieces.........

I looked at the design and add 2 extra spots.
I now ask myself if the yew wood is so fragile that it will break faster than lets say oak?
does anyone have experience with yew?

I will start with #3 but I think that I will take birch plywood. It has to travel all over the world so....

what do you all think?

finally done, my present is on the mail today.
the postoffice lady said 7 days for priority shipping it over see.
otherwise it would be 14 days so I used the priority stamps.

I thought in the first announcement from Russ he said the chat room should be open somewhere between 12 an 18 December, so it should be there on time.
