Legs just received the 2nd coat of PolyU...
Base (I call it the Barrel) got first coat of PolyU.
Top...Top side is sanded to 400 grit, stained "MinWax Golden Oak" and ready for the poly. Underside has been almost totally stripped of all the Dr. Pepper that had run over the edges and dried on the under side! Had to take a break and get some air! Scrubbed with Mineral Spirits then Denatured Alcohol and was doing the final wipe with Lacquer Thinner when the fumes finally got me! So the window is open, fans running and I am sitting next to the open patio door! Been a loong time since I did that number!
Will Poly the underside later today and start the top side in the morning when the legs and 'barrel' move out of the way!
ADDENDUM...wandered through an Antique Mall Saturday and found FOUR chairs that are perfect to replace our older ones! Solid oak with the fibreboard seats (need replacements) and in good condition. Will only require using a finish restorer and not sanding down to bare wood! Furniture Restoring place said the best thing to cut the new chair inserts to shape is a SCROLLSAW! (Imagine That)
Table: Free
Chairs and parts: $145
Restoring Labor: My Own!
New "Antique Table and Chairs": PRICELESS

I have to be finished by Saturday!
I WILL take Pics of the "Finished" product!
~~~GB~~~People are coming to pick up the old set on Sunday!
-
Thanks for the update GB!
Looking forward to the pics! It's been a long process so you should get a particularly strong sense of accomplishment when you've got it all done.
Becky I truly wanted to make it an easy going process with no push or deadline. There is a lot of very nice wood and and I wanted to do it right.
I have not refinished a piece of furniture since the early 60's and that was a "have to" and this is a "Want To!"
You should get a ton of use out of it, and then leave a fine hand-me-down when you don't need it any longer GB! My wife bought a set of "Coke" chairs and table in the 70's (round metal bent and twisted into shape) and asked me to make her an Oack round table top for the table. It still sits in our kitchen and gets used daily 40 years later. Enjoy it!
Bill...this table has a history. It was made by a farmer/woodworker/U.S. Forest Ranger about 75 years ago. He passed it to his son who used it in his farm kitchen until the late 70's. When he passed on his son, a prosperous dentist in Springfield, used it in his basement game room until he got remarried and his new wife redecorated every room in his house. So he gave it to his son who has since given it to me. I have been told there has been a lot of money that has changed hands on that table top because the whole family were and still are avid poker players!
It wasn't really beat up but just needed a good helping of TLC! That's what I am striving to give it so it will last for many more years.
My oldest son was by the other day visiting from Wisconsin and has already stated that it will go nicely in his 130 year old farmhouse which he and his wife have completely restored.
When I am finished working on it I am going to get more details about the history, write it up and then seal it in an envelope attached to the bottom of the table.
Great idea GB. The history of a piece makes for great conversation.
Oh if that table could talk. LOL. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. 8)
I was thinking the same thing yesterday as I was working!
If only this table could tell all its tales!
~~~GB~~~

Talk....Heck I wish there were videos :D

Bet that table will have some tales to tell. ;D
Enjoy giving it the TLC it's needs, looking forward to seeing the results

GB, I didn't mean to imply you were slow, just that it was a big project. The resanding alone was worthy of being called a project!
I'm with Judy. I'd rather see the movie! ;)

GB, It appearers you have a lot of Dentist in you past!
