Title: LOOKEEEEE What I Found!
Post by: GrayBeard on October 03, 2010, 01:12:28 pm
It pays to do the GOOGLE search now and then!

After the discussion of Sloans and Baltic Birch plywood I tried looking around Google to see if there were any other sources and i stumbled across this site just about 45 miles from my home!

http://www.woodnshop.com/ (http://www.woodnshop.com/)

Will try to make a trip and visit there real soon!

I seem to forget, all too often, that by Googling something many new things might be discovered.  It happened again as a result of this thread.
I Googled "Baltic Birch Plywood AND Detroit".  I'm about 30 miles west of Detroit.
Up pops suppliers in my area for BB.
What surprised me was another product I'd never heard of.  ApplePly
ApplePly is said to be an American product similar to Baltic Birch and it comes in 4x8 sheets.
Here's a link:

I've not yet found any near me but it does sound interesting

Apple ply is some good stuff. It is usually used for drawer sides in cabinets, but is very expensive! It's not economical for us scrollers.

RE: Heritage Wood....

I ordered some BB from them last night...

This is what you will receive in your 'confirmation email' from Heritage:

"Thank you for your order!
If this is your first order with us, please remember that we are a custom shop, and we make everything up special for you.  That means it may take up to 14 days before your order is produced, and we do not bill your card until the order is in production.  Typical FEDEX shipping time is an additional 3-5 working days."

Seems like a long time to wait for stock BB plywood!
So I emailed them this morning and requested that they advise me of the actual time frame and if they can't ship by Friday I will cancel the order.
For $5 more I could have gone to Sloan and had the materials by Monday or Tuesday!

My BAD for trying to save a couple bucks!!!!!!!!

Hey GrayBeard, I have ordered from Heritage in the past. They are indeed a custom order shop. But what I ordered was excellent! I ordered several panels of 1/4"x 12x 24" panels of maple, solid hardwood. It did take a couple of weeks for delivery, but was pleased with the wood.

I've been ordering my hard wood from Heritage for over a year now.  Every time I try someone different I end up going back because the quality from others isn't as good.  Usually I receive my order about 2 weeks after I make it, so I just plan ahead a little.

Howdy to ALL....I am NEW to ordering wood outside of Lowes or Home Depot.
I checked out 2 sites and I really need some questions answered....Both make me think they want $6 to $9 for just ONE 20x30 blank of say 1/4" Baltic Birch.  Heritage wanted $9 and change for a blank of the same wood 12x12?
Is this the going price everyone pays?  Thinks fer learnin me.  Danny  :+}

The plywood you are getting from Home Depot and Lowes (1/4") is very poor grade (quality) plywood for scrolling and is actually used as an underlayment for flooring.  8)
Good quality Baltic Birch is usually 5 ply and free of voids. It works great for fret work and small fragile cuts, it doesn't break as easy. So yes it is more expensive.   8)
I personally buy my BB from Sloan's Woodshop. Great people, good prices and fast shipping.   8)

5-ply 1/4"   12"x24"  Baltic Birch Plywood  $4.70

Thanks Russ for the lead.  That sounds better than the other two.  I did venture into Ebay a couple years ago and bid on a box of 1/4" baltic birch.  Came with 12 blanks of 12x12.  And I got all that for my bid of $10.00, but shipping was $8.00....SO....Is there anyone here that buys their craft wood off Ebay?  Just wondering....  Danny  :+}

Hey Karl....Glad to know you.  Hopefully for a long, long time to come.
     Here's a couple of my projects and as far as your question I would say all was really good.   Later....  Danny  :+}
