Title: The Most Time Spent Yet
Post by: WigWag Workshop on October 02, 2010, 02:11:42 pm
Good Day All!

Well, I went to Harbor Freight today a picked up a drill press, it was on sale for $50 + I had a 20% off coupon. I got home and spent about 3 hours cutting, I made a call sign name plate, using Steve's program, and 3 key chains, using Steve's program.  Wish I could say they all came out great, but they didn't.  I am getting better though, and I am having fun.  The first one I did was the name plate, it came out so bad, I told my lady, that it's a scary Halloween name plate  ;D  The first key chain was a disaster, the second one came out better, the interior cuts were awesome, but the outline was a little wavy. The third one was all around better, and with some sanding it might be good enough to add a finish to it.  Then I spent some more time cutting out test patterns.  All in all it was a fun morning.

The best thing is you now have something to keep and compare to as you move along!

Take your time and PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND PRACTICE and then when you think you have it down, PRACTICE some more!

Hey Steven, Try using thicker wood. You will have more control. I start my students off with 3/4" pine. Also for a flat bottom mount your pattern so the bottom of the pattern is flush with a straight edge of the board.

I find normal blades easier than spiral blades to keep on track.
can you slow down the speed of the saw, that gives more control to.

I was using a FD #5 SR and running the saw at almost the slowest speed.  It sure is a lot of fun, and I can say that I am addicted.
