One more Grampa! I dunno why I didn't think of asking you before.
Question for all - I'm not a regular with cutting stuff like this. What's the best wood and where do I get it? I'm thinking 1/4" ply... but the stuff at HD always chips and stuff.
Thanks!

Janet, you need to use a good quality Baltic Birch plywood. It won't chip and break like the 1/4" plywood at HD. I get mine from Sloan's Woodshop. Very nice people, good prices. Never had a problem. :)

Woohoo! Thanks Grampa!!!
Thanks Russ... I'm gonna order some :)
Russ - What do you normally order? 12x12?
-
Janet, It depends on the effect your looking for. I would use 1/4" Baltic birch plywood if you are not going to frame it. If you are going to frame it I would use 1/8" Baltic birch plywood so the cut piece and backing board will fit in the frame. I make my own frames but you get cheap ones at Micheal's Craft Store.
I usualy by 12x12 or 12x24.

Does Michael's sell 12x12 frames?
And should I get the stuff that says "good 2 sides" or not?
-
Janet the portraits are usually sized at 8-1/2"x 11", So you have to cut the BB to size.
-
Oh ok... duh. :P

Janet....
I got a bunch of frames lately from the Dollar General store. Also check places like Goodwill and other 'thrift shops' for re-usable frames. Simple coat of spray paint to dress them up is all you need.

Janet, I order my Baltic birch plywood "good one side" 12"X24" pieces. You can used 1/8" or 1/4" thickness. I like 1/4 " thick better, but I make my own frames out of 3/4" thick stock. So having room for a backer is no problem.
If you are using picture type frames you buy then you might want to use 1/8" thick BB. Order some of both 1/8" and 1/4" and try it.
Most premade picture frames come in a variety of sizes 5x7, 8x10, 8 1/2x11, 9x12, 11x14, 14 x18, 16x20, 18x24, 20x24, 22x28, and 24x30 inch.
You will have to decide what size frame you want or is available and cut the BB to fit. 8)
