Title: lighting
Post by: thumbs on September 10, 2010, 06:37:17 pm
I have been wondering what others use to maximize their light--I have over head shop lights but could use something better--any suggestions out there--Richard aka thumbs

I have floursent lighting in the shop but, I also have a light in a flexable neck that is designed for the DeWalt scroll saw too. I'm sure you have seen them on pictures of the DeWalt saw before. Watch some of Steves vidios of his demonstrations.
Depending on what saw you have the mfg. may offer something simular for your saw or you could jury-rig something that will work.
I use to have a reading light on a long arm with an elbow but it always seemed to get too hot, sag down at the wrong time or just be in the way, so I got rid of it.

Hey Thumbs, In addition to overhead florescent lights, I have a lighted magnifier light mounted on the left side of the saw, and another light on the right side of the saw.
The magnifier has a florescent light, and the other has an incandescent light.

I have 4' florescent lights also, but I am looking into a lighted magnifier. Thanks for the pics Dgman, It gives me a good idea how to set it up. I haven't ordered my lighted magnifier yet, But I will be soon. I am still looking for a local source, I guess I will probably have to order online. Could you tell me what the brand or model number is, since you use this one I know this one will work for scrolling.

I have eight 4' florescent lights in my shop, but I use lighted magnifier lamp and added a LED light to the end of the blower tube. Works great.  8)

I have a lighted magnifyer mounted on the upper arm of my saw.  Besides the flourescent lights on the ceiling, I have suspended flourescent lights at each of my work stations.

I use a lighted magnifier and had a bear of a time getting use to it but can't do without it now.  I found a lot of glare off the magnifying lense from the overhead lights so I turned them off.  What a difference.  It's much easier (for me) to concentrate on cutting when the pattern is the only thing that is lit.

regards,

John

I think it was mentioned but I will repeat....

You get what you pay for and the really cheap 'magnifier / light' combinations will not 'set still' and hold their position.
You can find them from $9.95 all the way up to over $200!

Get the best you can afford.

Excuse Me!!!! >:(   I bought mine from Harbor Freight for about $20.00, I have not had a problem with it staying still. First one is over a year old with the original bulb. Bought the second one for my Band Saw.  GB. The really "cheap 'magnifier / light" works great for me.  ::)  ::)  ::)

Your excused Russ! Actually my first magnifier was from Harbor Freight and it would not stay in place. I had to wrap rubber bands around the spring posts to add more tension to the springs. I was constantly adjusting it to keep it in place. I don't have that problem with my new one!

Excuse me! :o

My first on was from Meisel Woodworks and it performed just like Dan said. Works fine if it can be placed and left alone but if there was any vibration or if it had to be moved frequently it WOULD NOT STAY PUT.

Got one from my stepson's jewelry findings supplier and it works great.
$12.95 vs. $43.00

 Resolving Confusion....
13 bucks = non-working light / magnifier
40 bucks = working light w/ magnifier
