Title: Interesting Factoid!
Post by: GrayBeard on August 30, 2010, 10:35:50 am
The first testicular guard, the "Cup", was used in Hockey in 1874.
The first helmet was used in 1974.
That means it only took 100 years  for men to realize that their brain is also important?

Go for it ladies!

I heard there were two brains, but only enough blood to supply one of them at a time.

I hate to burst your bubble GB but the first helmet was used in an 1893 Army-Navy game.  8)

Also the reason I know it dates back prior to 1974 is being head trainer and paramedic for my sons high school football team for the past five years, I went to several seminars on football head related and neck injuries. The history of the helmet was referenced in several books and literature and referenced to in several lectures.  I also did a lecture on head injuries to the football players and parents on concussions signs and symptoms after the game. I had a brief slide show on the history and importance of the helmet.  8)

When I played cricket I never wore either until I was hit in the you know where, and it wasn't the head, not sure whether a protector would have helped
