If you want to make a pattern from a portrait, one way is with GIMP.  Free and I understand it runs on MAC too.

There is a really cool video series at Scroll Saw Village in the University on making portrait patterns.

I use Inkscape for making other patterns but I am not sure that is the best to transform a picture to a pattern.

Good luck and make sure you  post some pictures.

I believe so but I would download directly from GIMP even if takes longer.  I am not a geek and had issue with Bit Torrant downloads before.

If I download from someone I don't know I always run a scan after downloading and installing.

Good luck.
