Title: New naive member
Post by: smokey1945 on February 13, 2015, 01:20:07 pm
Hello all, I am new here and know NOTHING about the scroll saw.  But have wanted to try it out for a long time, so here we go.  I bought the ShopFox 16" and ordered several books and different blades.  After a lot of study I'm going to try my hand at it.
I won't be saying much, just watching and reading and learning.  So thank you for all you post and any tips.
I do have a couple of questions.  I would appreciate a list of reputable supply stores.  And it appears that the magnified light that Rockler has is the one to get, but it is EXPENSIVE!  Is there a cheaper, better one?
Thank you again.

Smokey, welcome to the forum. I am Paul from Washington.

After much research, I bought my light from Harbor Freight.  It is normally around $40 but cheaper if caught on sale or you have a coupon.  I clamps to my cabinet as opposed to a magnet. I am very happy with it.

Scroll saw blades, I and a lot (maybe most) recommend Flying Dutchman blades from Mike's Workshop.  Great price, super blades, great service.  http://mikesworkshop.com/   You can call Mike, he will answer all question about blades.  Great guy to deal with.

For patterns, wood, etc.  there are many many sites.  Most are very good to deal with.  If you have any doubts ask here before making a purchase.  Steve Good (owner of this site) has hundreds of great patterns and all free.

Jump in and have fun!

Here it is.  Took a while for me to find it, they call it a lamp, not a light....  go figure!

Hi Guy

I bought my light from Target for $11.00 or $12.00 and modified it to be bolted to my machine.

You might also try Hobby Lobby, Home Depot or Lowes and if you have Menards close by I know they have lights also
