Title: Lot of Blade breaks.
Post by: rdatelle on February 10, 2015, 09:53:42 am
Hi everyone. I left a comment on Paul's page about how he broke a lot of blades on his cutout. He had a lot of blade changes and that will cause a lot of breaks. I had the same problem on this pic using a 3/0 reverse blade. There's a lot of bending of the blade when you try to get it through that little hole and it wears down but I got it done. This is 1/4 in B/B, 8x10

Beautiful job there, I'd say it was worth the blade breaks.

Very nicely cut.  Top load to help reduce the blade breakage.  Thanks for sharing this with us.

That is a beautiful piece.

My guess it could be a number of things that cause more blades to be used.  I use the 3/0 spiral and go through blades pretty quickly.  My last picture was the worst on blades.  I feel it could sometimes be caused by the particular pieces of wood being used.  I this case for a backer, I had a 1/4" piece of what looks like oak on one side, some filler and I don't know what on the other side.  It was an old piece of plywood off the back of a headboard.  I'm thinking it was hard on blades.(??)

But blades are cheap.  So I don't worry it much.

Again, you did a beautiful job on your piece.

Thanks everyone. I ordered some spiral blades from the Mike, size 3/0. I never used them before so I'm going to give them a try.

Pretty much all I use for portrait type work.  Give them a good try, start out slow and relaxed.  I think you will like them.  I buy them by the gross!

Good job Ralph. You may have used many blades but it was worth it in the end.

The final result looks good. Worth the breaking of blades. I know how frustrating that can be. For me I am lucky. 2 years ago I put a Christmas wish list for blades I like. My mother in law went to get me all 3 dozen blades. But she ordered a dozen of each pack. So I ended up with 3 gross of blades. When they break I get mad until I remember they were all a gift and I have tons.

I use the spiral blades for a lot of projects. I know some people don't like them much but I sure do. I keep them in the M&M plastic containers you can get at most stores. Just eat the candy and put blades in. Has a nice snap lid. I tape the blade info on each container. I also find that the speed/force used will break more blades. Be patient with the work and let the saw do the work...don't push so hard on the blade. All the same good looking project. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks again everyone. I got my spiral blades from Mike a few days ago but I haven't tried them yet. To cold in my Garage right now. Hope the weather warms up soon. Can't wait to try them.
