I am looking for the formula for the mixture of BLO; Mineral Sprits; & Poly. I know I have it as it was on the site. I saved it, wrote it down and kept it for safe keeping. Now senior moment is kicking in big time. If I remember wright, the formula is: Use a quart mason jar and put a strip of painters tape on the outside of it marked off in 1 inch spaces. Then add BLO to the first mark, then add mineral sprits to the second mark, then poly. Does this sound right to anyone??? If not please help out a bald headed fat man.
Thanks folks

Many of us mix the BLO & mineral spirits in a 50/50 solution and do not add any poly...
After soaking the project in the BLO solution and letting it dry we apply our finish of choice...Mine happens to be spry lacquer (satin).

I have seen that a lot, Graybeard. I also want to try that. It seems that someone said to use the mixture I am talking about really works good for outside projects??
Thanks for the help.

I find! I find! It was in a notebook covered up by something.
It's called "Rude & Crude"
In mason jar
1" BLO
1" Mineral Spirits
2" Polyurethane
Mix well, use brush (I wonder if I can spray it?)
Teflon tape around threads of jar.
Painters tape down side of jar with 1" marks to top of jar.

Yep! That was the suggestion that I posted some time ago.
The 50/50 (BLO and Mineral spirits) works quite well for most things but, the addition of the polyurethane will seal the wood better and give it a nice soft shine also.

P.S. The tape on the outside of the jar marked in inches is just my way of mixing the concoction. You can measure it out anyway you like as long as you come up with 25%, 25%, 50%. However the Teflon plumbing tape around the threads of the jar are a requirement or you will never get the lid off again. D A M H I K (Don't Ask Me How I Know) ;D

This sounds interesting. Is there a shelf life? Does the mineral spirits evaporate & change the 25%/25%/ 50% mix?
-
Yeah, I know about sealing jar treads. I get the glue I use in bulk and put it in mustard jars to use. One day I thought about putting Vaseline on the treads. I will try the tape.
Do you think this mix could be sprayed????

Well, if you keep the lid on the jar, it won't evaporate any faster than if it was in the original can. It does help to dry the BLO and poly when it is used on a project, that is the reason it is in there. Anyway, the EXACT mixture isn't really all that important either.
I'm not sure about spraying it because I don't have a spray gun to try it with but, I would think that it would spray just fine. Just use mineral spirits to clean the gun afterwards. It can't be any harder to do than any other finish I wouldn't think.

Sounds interesting Roger. I use the 50/50 blo and mineral spirits all the time and it seems to work fine but the idea of adding poly may be something I would like to try. When you say 25%/25%/50% for your mixture, which one is the 50%? And yes, the teflon tape is a must... Found that out the hard way also. Thanks Al

I use two fingers then a splash of water and some ice...Oh wait...That's Jack not finish. Boy! Sure hope I don't get em mixed up.
