Title: Williamette Clock
Post by: Becky on July 21, 2013, 11:32:17 pm
This is the Williamette clock from The Art Factory.  It took about a month and a half - most in the building phase because I find that to be the hardest part and spend a long time thinking about how to do the steps.  It will be a birthday gift for my father in about a month.  And it inspired me to get a new sander though I hope the reasons why are not too obvious.

Excellent workmanship Becky.  I am sure that your father is going to treasure that.  I always admire folks that do a lot of fret work as I do not have the patience to start and stop all the time.  I have a couple of ongoing fretwork pieces that have been in the ongoing category now for at least 2 years. hehe .. they are slowly getting done.  Anyway I digress, Becky that is a wonderful piece, thank you for sharing this with us.

The big thing that is obvious about this piece is that you have really great talent!

Can you tell us a bit about the wood and the finishing?

Thanks,

Jay

Thanks for all the kind comments.  When I got the pattern I honestly didn't know if I could do it.  I guess it just proves that being stubborn isn't always a bad thing.

Jay,  from dark to light the woods are walnut, African mahogany and aspen.  I chose aspen over maple for the white because of the long piece at the bottom.  My theory was that, given the fine grain of aspen, it wouldn't be obvious that it was the only vertical piece on the clock with the grain going sideways. Otherwise I sure wouldn't recommend aspen.  It made a ton of fuzzies (even with a UR blade and a sacrificial piece of plywood on the bottom).  They were nearly impossible to get rid of - I would swear that sanding and filing away the old fuzzies made new ones to take their places.

I finished it with a gentle rub of Danish oil (natural).  When that dried I gave it five spray coats of Deft semi-gloss.
