Title: Different Material
Post by: MikieD on December 02, 2012, 01:57:04 pm
Lately I have been cutting the scroll saw patterns out of paper just for a change.  I have enjoyed the challenge and it is a lot less dust making (so my wife says!)

I know there are several out there who have cut out the Old Cedar Mill pattern and here is my effort in paper.  The finished piece is 9.25" H X 7.25" W.  It was a real challenge to make the cuts without tearing out parts of the pattern - especially in the water area and the board siding.  Hope you like it.  You can see more of my paper cutting on my new website http://www.mgdunk.com.  I will be adding more pictures of my carving and scroll saw/Intarsia as time permits.

This is really Amazing Mike....A big Wow! from me.  Took a view at your website and I will say this is my first with seeing what looks like a Scroll project and being told it was cut out of PAPER.  Is there a demand for this type portraits?  Danny  :+}

Hi Danny,

Thank you for your kind words.  I don't know if there is a demand for the paper cutting.  I just started doing this about a month ago.  I guess a lot would depend on the subject (as I assume it does in the scroll sawed wood).  I just like the challenge (and the nose that doesn't fill up with saw dust!)

I think the Old Mill turned out awesome.  I worked with a fellow twenty, two years ago, that used to do the same thing and it wasn't until I saw yours that I remembered watching him.

The pictures on your website all look great.

This is great! I also saw the others on your website, amazing.
Two questions. Is this all done with exacto knives, and what kind of paper is used?

Hi Pete,
Yes the xacto knife with a #11 blade is all I use for cutting the paper.  The fine point on the #11 lets me make the smallest of cuts.  The paper I used for most of the cuttings is just regular 20 lb bond like you find in printers or photocopiers.  The last couple of cuttings have been done with a Japanese Massa paper that I found at a local Art store.  It is about the same weight as the bond paper but it has a lot of small fibers running through it.  It resists tears and make the fine lines of paper that are left (like the boards on the mill) stronger.

Good for U. I bet you must have kept brand new blades constantly. Did u use paper, poster board, cardboard?

Mike....Hope no body already asked, but can't remember reading about how long did it take you to cut that pattern?  And you must have 20/20 vision and not get many head aches from staring at so many different shapes for so long.  You are Amazing. Danny

HI Danny,
Thank you for your kind words.  I'm afraid I don't have very good eye sight (cataracts) so I use a magnifying lens that fits on my head.  I can only work like that for about two hours max and then have to take a rest.  The Cedar Mill project took me over a week to finish working between two and three hours a day.  Hard on the eyes but enjoy the work...

I am working on that same pattern now but sawing in 1/8 " oak plywood.
It is 11 X 17. It is the hardest thing I've done so far. I an about 2/3 s done .

As a paper crafter who uses a digital cutter I just say, you are amazing! I'm shocked that you hand cut those designs! Looks great!

Ok, this really intrigues me. I have been an origami enthusiast for over 20 years. (art of paper folding) I have done some cutting, but nothing like this. You have probably seen my snowflakes that I made from cutting a paper pattern first then wood cutting them. The snowflakes I cut and don't make into wood patterns are a lot more intricate than my wood ones. I have thought of cutting patterns with an exacto, but havent done it yet. I will be taking a closer look at your art, this is an area of crafting I think I would like as much as wood cutting. I am also considering doing some pyro work, just need to get some good ideas for that. Thanks for sharing all this. Love your website.

Thanks for your kind words. One day a couple of months ago I couldn't use my workshop and I felt like cutting something so I took a scrollsaw pattern and attacked it with an xacto knife.  I was very pleased with the way the cutting went and my wife liked that I wasn't creating any more dust around the house  :D .  The nice thing about cutting paper is you don't have to drill a number of holes and you don't have to feed your scrollsaw blade through them!  Goes a lot faster than scrolling wood.

I have also done a couple of pyrography pieces and they were fun.  I found a book about pyrography and it had a couple of patterns that I used.  I have also used pictures in some of the How To Draw with pencils as patterns.  I'll see if I can get pictures up on my site of the finished work.
