Title: Trinket Boxes
Post by: Keefie on December 01, 2012, 11:18:40 am: I know this isn't scroll saw work, but thought you might like to see the first of 50 boxes I have to make for the "Wheal Jane Mine". They are made from Yew and the lids have to accomodate the little filigree insert shown in the picture. The insert is made from Cornish Tin actually mined on the site. (they gave me the one in picture to use for making the lids.) I get ?10 per box, then they fit the inserts to the lid and sell them on their website for ?35.

Post by: Keefie on December 01, 2012, 01:27:15 pm: DG, they take about 1 1/2 hrs to turn (cause I have to keep stopping to sit for a while to ease my leg), but yew is one of my favourite woods to turn, with sharp tools it cuts beautifully and only needs light sanding. Then I put 2 coats of sanding sealer on it and burnish it with a handful of shavings then a coat of turners paste wax and buff it with soft cloth, it leaves it with a nice shine you can almost see your face in.

They look like something I would make on my lathe. Nice work. I love making boxes on the lathe. One of my favorite I have made was from a tree root that was tearing up a church hall. We cut the tree down and had to remove the root. I call it my "Root of all Evil" box. And yes, I do store money in it. =)
