GreyBeard, Haven't done that but have picked up a can spray adhesive instead of  lacquer. Caught my self before I sprayed. ::)

That hurts just thinking about that happening. I have used the wrong color of stain a time or two.

So what does the mistake look like now?  Any pictures or did you throw it away?

No throw away! Hit it with the sander and was able to salvage it. Had to re-stain but it will pass. Is an attendance prize for a picnic on Monday so time to do over if needed but not necessary. PIc later...I'm tired!!!

I did that exact thing about two years ago (and I don't think I was considered a 'rookie' then!)  I was making the final touches on some ornaments that HAD to go to the magazine for the Holiday issue and I grabbed the can of white enamel and started giving them a good spray.  It was about the third or forth coat and I was able to wipe it off quickly, but I had to lightly sand some of them to get rid of the evidence.  Boy, was I mad!  I guess that is why they color code the caps on the sprays.  But sometimes that just isn't enough.  You bet your bippie that I check the label before spraying since then. :)

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!  :)

Well, I am glad you could salvage it. I have made some mistakes where they turned out to be firewood. Here is a finish tip on finishes, I am not sure where I read this but, If you use polyurethane in a can, not a spray can, and want a gloss finish and only have a satin finish you can use the satin finish in the can, just do not stir it, it is the stirring that mixes small particles from the bottom of the can that create the satin finish. I am not sure if a spray can of satin finish would be glossy if you did not shake it, the ball in the can is what mixes it up.

Ed you must have loved yourself! Nearly made that mistake last week, just caught meself in time. I had used blank spray and red spray and did not replace the caps so grabbed the first one and started to go outside and then it struck me that the can was rather heavier than I remember, checked and it was red and not blank. Gld you could salvage it though.

;D I almost have the same joke, but I saw him in time. And for good reason, I always look what is written on the box, on the tube on the bottle or on the bomb before using certain products or painting whatsoever.  ;)

I did something stupid. I use lemon oil, and finish it with Acrylic Lacquer. I wasn't paying any mind to what I was doing. Grabbed a can of Lacquer, (Black spray paint). AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I could not believe what I had just done. Was lucky. sanded it down. Broke a piece off. Had to glue the piece back on. I was really glad when that project was done. Dave

I haven't made that mistake yet. Notice I said yet. I think the odds are it could happen to anyone, just a matter of time.

Who stains walnut, and with the walnut being so dark already, what color other than black can you make walnut look like?

Ouch!  I haven't done that (yet) but I can easily imagine me doing it or something similar.  It's like spraying deodorant in your hair or putting Neosporin on your toothbrush.   ;)

I meant to say finished but I was making so many goofs that day I slipped!

NO I don't stain walnut, this was a BB cutout that I stained with 'dark walnut stain to stand out against a natural BB background piece.

GrayBeard if you woodwork long enough you'll screw-up again too , that's the way it is . Another thing we all have these days , and when this happens > it best sometimes just to quit and go in the house for the day ..........

The mark of good craftsmanship isn't avoiding screw-ups (something always goes wrong somewhere in almost every project that I do)...Instead, it's all about how you deal with them so that the project still turns out OK.

Marshall....

Here's a story from my long ago youth!

Dad's day off.
Building a 'chicken house' during WWII to raise our own for eggs and meat.

Dad measures a board and gives me the dimension, I was about 7 at the time. As he leaves for the hardware store to pick up some more supplies he says, cut those 2 X 4's to that dimension I gave you.

Dad leaves and I slave away cutting my little heart out to make him proud.

I get finished and as I am cleaning up I look at what he had written on a scrap of wood.
PANIC! I had cut all the pieces 3/4" too SHORT.

Dad returns to find me sitting on the steps with my head hanging down. Asks, "What's wrong?"

So I had to tell him, expecting a sound slap up the side of the head!

He simply looked at me and said something I still remember and tell others, "Is that the only mistake you have ever made?"
"NO", I said.
"Well you can darn well bet it will not be the last mistake you will ever make! Now let's go get us some more wood!"

Never forgot it and never will!!!

I LOVE that story Greybeard!  I have a friend who has taught me so much.  He has built over 100 houses and countless pieces of furniture and all you can imagine.  He said to me "anyone who says they never made a mistake is a liar".  How true.  And how wonderful you dad was in his response to you!

Sheila

PS - I don't see the grey beard in your picture anymore.  Did you shave?

By the way that story is NOT copyrighted!
Feel free to use your own adaptations at will.
I feel it is a great philosophy.

I have made that same mistake. I thought I had picked up acrylic spray but I actually picked up spray glue. What a mess that made.

Hey Steve!
Why didn't you reply the other day and make me feel better?

The "Master Scroller" himself blew one!

Thanks....

Sorry to hear that. Haven't made that mistake. I have opened a window after satining and when I went back there was sawdust all over it.

I always said making mistakes actually makes you a better woodworker, First you probably will not make the same mistake again and second we learn how to fix them.
