Title: Its the Doorway
Post by: slowcutter on October 12, 2012, 02:45:05 pm
Ahhh now I feel much better.  Its the Doorway, not me.!!

"Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses.

Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale."
It's not aging, it's the door!     Whew! Thank goodness !!!

I'm a bit like you Keefie, but it's not doors, it's STAIRS. Get halfway up and forget what I was going for. Then get all the way back down and suddenly remember what I was going up for. Could it be senility after all????. My wife insists my senior moments are lasting all day LOL.

I knew there was a good explanation somewhere! Thanks
How about when I'm driving down the road and suddenly realize I have no idea where I'm going?
Must be the car door??

I'm betting the researchers were old folks like us.  You can find an explanation for anything as long as you don't look too hard at the explanation.

I can actually find some belief in this. One of the best memory trick for memorizing a list of things is through association. You associate what you want to remember with something you already know. For example you can number your body head to toe with ten body parts. ie: 1. Head, 2. shoulders, 3. arms, 4. hands, 5. chest, 6. stomach, 7 waist, 8. thighs, 9. calves, 10. feet.  Then you associate the item on the list with each body part. Add to that something funny to imagine and you will never forget the list. To complete this example if you wanted to remember the first item on a grocery list: cheese. Then you just put cheese with #1 on your body list. 1 = head, 1 = cheese. Now make a funny mental image such as having a head made of a block of cheese. Do this with the whole list and you have a list you will never forget. So what does this have to do with the room and door? To make a large list you can use rooms in your house and just number items in each room as you mentally think of what is in the room. So now you go through a door and darn it you forgot....lol I know this is a big stretch,  but now you all know a good way to memorize a list of things.  ;)
