If I was younger and had more space in my shop I think I?d add Knife making to my list of Hobbies. I have a friend, I?ve known for years, that makes Knifes and he?s been after me a long time to come over and make one or at least watch. He?s almost 90 years old, so I decided if I was going to do it I?d better do it now.
I spent a couple days making this one, using his equipment and watching him make one at the same time. He had the materials, tools and know-how, all I had to do was follow his lead and go through the same steps he did. Can?t beat hands-on instructions. Much easier than trying to learn from a book
I?m very happy with the way it turned out.
Stainless Steel Blade,
8-1/2? overall length,
Handles are made of Cocobola.

Nice to have friends you can work together with. The knife looks great Al. Enjoy the moment while you can. :)

Very cool Al! Did you make the blade yourself? A few years ago I made a set of steak knifes including a presentation box, but I bought the blades.

That is one beautiful 'blade'!
I would be proud to carry that anywhere...
Go for it, Al.......

Dan, I did make the blade; it was by far the hardest part. I was lucky he has all the necessary equipment. I wouldn't even try it otherwise. A lot of grinding, sanding and buffing!!!

Wow Al...That looks like a professional job....Wonder what they'll look like when you get good.
-
That is a beautiful knife.

GREAT KNIFE! Around here they make them from old files. One friend even made one from an old railroad spike.

Wow its beautiful... Great to have friends show you how... Sheila

A beautiful piece of work Al. Just proves there's nothing to beat hands on learning. I,m sure you will turn out more before you're 90. lol.

Beautiful knife. It's good that he could pass along some of his knowledge to prevent it from being lost. I have a knife that was given to me in 1966 that was made with an aluminum handle.

Looks great Al! I caught a sale at Woodcraft on knife kits a while back and just finished making the handles out of glued up wood blanks contoured to match the knife tang, then got sheath kits from Tandy and modified them to fit. Even better making the metal parts as well!

It is a wondefull piece of work, you did a very good job. I hope that was not the fist and last knife you have made.
-
That is one awesome knife, you should be really proud that you made the blade as well.
-
Very nice. What a great legacy he has passed down to you. Someday long after he is gone you will be making knives, and with every knife you make you will think of him. Perhaps you will become the master knife maker and pass that knowledge on to someone else. Never let the trade die. Thanks for showing us this and your knife is very nice. Would never know it was a first.
