I recently purchased some patterns from Sheila Landry Designs and was very anxious to start cutting them out, perhaps a bit too anxious! One of the patterns I bought from her was the self framing Sun n' Moon pattern (Not sure that's what she calls it, but it is what I call it). And in my excitement of making the pattern I guess I had what you would call a "Brain Fart". If I had followed the many pages of instruction that Sheila includes with her patterns, I probably would not have messed up, but I didn't, and yes I did mess up! I cut the bevel in the wrong direction on the wood that was supposed to inset the face. It was supposed to be an inny, but ended up being an outy when compared to belly buttons.
Such a dilemma, I didn't want to throw away a perfectly good piece of Maple hard wood, so I just started playing with what I had and came up with the following. I cut the face out added a couple risers to the back and made the face an outy instead of an inny and got the router out.
I honestly think it came out really nice, sometimes even a Brain Fart can be good!

I call that a design change Bob! As long as you can make it work, It's not a boo boo! ;)
Nice save!

Hey Bob, looks good to me, I'd never know you made a boo boo. It turned out very nice. You made a great save.
-
I like it better this way.

When you mess up and it turns out this good you call it Artist Change. However when I make a mess-up it's called artist firewood.I have never learned a thing without a failure to show me the right path. :D

Patterns are only guides. Everyone that cuts something from a pattern changes it in someway. The unintended change you made to the pattern turned out to be a good one, both versions are great. Thinking outside the box so to speak will keep you from making as much designer firewood. Everyone makes some of it and we try to reduce the amount :)
Great save on that Sun/Moon. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Great use of "Artistic Licence" to change the pattern to how you wanted the end product to look. (albeit accidentally, but no one needs to know that lol)
Love the finished piece.

Bob - If you hadn't brought up your"Boo Boo" or the designers intent, I would have said [and still will] you have a very good looking project. Sometimes those mistakes make us turn on the creative juices and we're rewarded with a handsome result. Congrats

I agree with you, GB. Knowing Sheila, she will incorporate this into whatever designs she is working on now....or shortly.
Looks great, Bob.
