Title: Sign for a Camp
Post by: DobiePaws on May 26, 2012, 09:11:33 am
A friend requested a sign for their campsite, this is what I came up with. The back plate is 3/4" pine stained red mahoganey. The face is 1/4" baltic birch plywood stained natural. I used wood glue to put it together and then polyurathaned the whole thing. Kinda an experiment to how it will hold up outside. I considered using small nails to reinforce the floating pieces from the backside, guess we'll find out ;o)

:D :D  Nice, thanx for the show and tell. I'll keep my eyes out for the sign this camping season.

Hey Deanna, That is a very nice sign indeed!
Next time consider using ceder or redwood for the backing board and Finnish Plywood for the overlays. Pine will not last outdoors for very long unless you paint it every year. Finnish plywood is just like Baltic birch except it is made with waterproof glues. Using small brads and a water resistant glue like Titebond III will also help.
Polyurethane will not hold up outdoors either. Your better off using outdoor paint in the colors of choice.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, and dgman thanks for the tips......... I used what I had but I can see it falling apart if left outside long term - I think they will just hang it outside their camper on they weekends the actually use the camper, guess we will find out.

I hate to disagree with you Dan, but there are exterior formulas of polyurethane that are for finishing wood, metal objects and furniture that will be used outside the home, like wooden lawn furniture and picnic tables that will hold up as good as any paint. I use it all the time and have had great success.  8)
