Title: iPad Case
Post by: RonJr on August 23, 2010, 02:33:11 pm
My dad ChaplainRon just got into scrolling.

Here's the super awesome and expensive "DoDo Case"
http://www.dodocase.com/

Here's the DIY Version:
http://www.themoderndaypirates.com/pirates/2010/06/how-to-make-a-moleskine-ipad-case/

and: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Book-like-iPad-Case-Dodo-Moleskin-style/

Now what I was thinking was, what if there was a unique way to combine the wood and leather look and incorporate an apple logo cut into the wood cover?? Anyone work with Leather and scrolling? Please advise, and hopefully ChaplainRon will give it a go!

Could this be a subtle hint?

Thanks Ron, My Ipad has been looking for a place to live. I had looked at the Moleskin cases but thought they were over priced. I think I'll have to give this a try. Good post.

Did everybody catch the caption under Ron Jr. name?  "I scroll with a mouse".  Too funny!  I think this clever boy just found a way to get a very cool case.

That is NOT a hint. That is "Hey, Dad make this for me."  ;D
I get that all the time. My daughter-in-law called me a few weeks ago and said "Dad, I want a sitting bench for our bedroom for Christmas."  ::)  Well, we are going to deliver it next Sunday! A bit early true but, it is taking up too much room in the shop.  ;)
You are gettin by cheap and easy on this one.  ;D  I have also made a head board for the daughter and son-in-law and I can't count all the picture frames and what-not shelves and even a medicion cabnet over the last few years. Not to mention that I usually scroll something for everyone in the family every year to give on Christmas morning.  :D

I had 3 grandbabbies in 3 months - All the cradles came from - guess who - grandma.  In the middle, I moved 4 hours away and still got them all done in time.  My kids love what I do, but don't share the "want to".  Hey, it got them through college.

Hi Ronjr, cool idea, I know a couple of people who would love one for Christmas.
Now to get Ronsr to make it for you once somebody here comes up with an idea, which is bound to happen sooner or later.

I don't have an Ipad and don't know the dimensions. I really don't think my son would mail his Ipad to me for a few weeks that it would take to design and cut out and make a working case. I hope someone with creative time will come up with a pattern. If so I am sure there would be many Ipad cases under Christmas trees this year.

Maybe Ron Jr will buy you an iPad.  ;D  But, since Steve is interested, maybe he'll make it and post the pattern.

RapidRoger... I'd like a sitting bench.   ;D ;D ;D

BTW... I love instructables.  I made a few things from that... including a ladder ball set.  :D

It is kit....Ya start with a stack of pine boards and cut away the parts that don't look right. Just like scrolling!  ;D

I'm sure Steve would get a lot of downloads on a pattern for something like that.

I don't have an iPad but I confess that I am sorely tempted.  I don't really have a good reason to own one except they look like fun and would be great for the odd business trip.  But if I did have one, I'd definitely want a nice case for it and it would be pretty cool to be able to make it myself.

I'm like you Becky...... Trying to think of a good reason why I ought to buy an iPad. Making a nice wood case for it would be a good excuse.  :) I'd think there would be some demand to for those who sell at craft fairs.

I'd love to send you one dad, but I can't even afford a case. . . spent all my money on this ipad lol. Here's what I had in mind. If only the real thing were as easy as photoshop lol.

Oh and I don't know how cheap it would be. . . Ideally the cover would be Goat Skin Leather http://www.hollanders.com/supplies/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=efa3fbd3-56c6-4340-8386-5aa9bef268b0&CategoryID=0e40cf56-881e-4349-a5ad-8e52f6e443fd (http://www.hollanders.com/supplies/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=efa3fbd3-56c6-4340-8386-5aa9bef268b0&CategoryID=0e40cf56-881e-4349-a5ad-8e52f6e443fd) and the wood is old English oak http://www.hollanders.com/supplies/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=efa3fbd3-56c6-4340-8386-5aa9bef268b0&CategoryID=0e40cf56-881e-4349-a5ad-8e52f6e443fd (http://www.hollanders.com/supplies/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=efa3fbd3-56c6-4340-8386-5aa9bef268b0&CategoryID=0e40cf56-881e-4349-a5ad-8e52f6e443fd)

You can't just put the magical iPad in any old case. . .lol

Better to know what you want than be all wishy-washy I suppose.  Then dear ol' dad wouldn't know the specs!   ;)

BTW, I heard on the radio that the iPads coming out this fall would be able to multi-task.  I don't know more than that but it seems like a feature worth waiting for (along with supporting flash video if that will ever happen).  It makes not buying one "just yet" seem clever anyway.  That makes it a little easier to resist the temptation.

I thought about getting one. I had the money and could buy my Dewalt 788 or an IPAD. Hands down I made the right decision.

I jail broke mine to enable multitasking, and when the update comes out from apple I'll be able to install it too. As far as flash, it will never happen. I had the hacked flash plugin working on it yesterday(no video) and it was pretty ugly. Even on my droid interacting with flash is a horrible experience. It's confusing because flash is designed around a mouse interface which is inherently different from the touch interfaces. You click something in the flash object and nothing happens so yu click it a couple more times and then you realize that it worked the first time and was buffering and now yup stopped it and have to start buffeting all ocher again. It's just bad.

Let me translate GEEK SPEAK.

I jail broke mine Broke the software code to input his own functions.to enable multitasking,Doing more than one thing at a time. Like listen to music and run another program. and when the update comes out from appleThis is a software update to fix bugs and make the ipad even better. 8) I'll be able to install it too. As far as flash, it will never happen. Apple and the Flash program developers are fighting for control so Apple will never let it run on their hardware.I had the hacked flash plugin working on it yesterday(no video)This was an unauthorized update and change to the apple software and it did not work. and it was pretty ugly. It was really bad.Even on my droid His Cell phone operating on the Android operating system.interacting with flash Flash allows you to watch streaming video over a wireless network.is a horrible experience. It's confusing because flash is designed around a mouse interface which is inherently different from the touch interfaces. Mouse is the desktop computer way of scrolling 8-)) The touch interface is the touch screen used by the ipad. You click something in the flash object and nothing happens so yu click it a couple more times and then you realize that it worked the first time and was buffering and now yup stopped it and have to start buffeting all ocher again.buffering is what is happening when the computer is downloading enough of the file to play. When it is stopped and restarted it must download again from the start. It's just bad.You are better off to not jailbreak your ipad and install this stuff in the first place.

Son you must use regular words when speaking to people my age.... 8-))

I'm definitely better off jail-breaking because multitasking is only one bonus! I also have open-ssh so I can ssh in and get a shell on my ipad. This also gives me sftp so I don't have to use iTunes. . . but none of this matters without a sweet case to keep it all in. . .  ;)

LOL, Ron Sr., that translation was a hoot!  There's always a fallback career for you at the United Nations!   ;)

I'd go with the Dewalt too, faced with the same choice.   ;D

Thanks for the translation.  My son has a computer science degree.  When he sees that "WHAT????" look on my face, he backs up and slows down so I can understand what he is telling me to do.  Hey, I was smart enough to get both of my kids through college.

I am waiting for Steve or someone to make a pattern that will work. Since I don't have an ipad it would be difficult to know where to cut out for the ports. I am holding out for a visit. He already told me he would not mail his ipad for me to use as I make it and hold hostage till he comes home to pick it up. So I will hold out for a visit so we could measure and make it together.

Grandpa's must do what is necessary to get our children to come for a visit and bring the grandkids.

We don't have that problem. Usually we see our children and grandchildren every week. I am teaching my granddaughter to scroll. She comes over twice a week for lessons.  8)

Hey dgman, if you are talking about the fretwork arbor is was for my daughters birthday. Yes it worked great and she loved it. I added my own center piece. Again Thanks for the pattern.  :)
