Title: Beware of emails...Kama Sutra.pps ! ! ! !
Post by: GrayBeard on January 19, 2011, 03:20:22 pm
Kama Sutra presentation is malware!

A nasty email is doing the rounds promising a PowerPoint presentation of the Kama Sutra but includes a program to take control of your computer as well.

Sophos is reporting that an infected email is about to tempt PowerPoint users looking to improve their technique in the ?horizontal folk-dancing? department <g>.

The email uses a common trick in the attachment to deceive the unwary.

The attachment is called Real kamasutra.pps.exe ? notice the twin extension?

The trick is that people see the .pps ending and figure it?s a PowerPoint presentation and overlook the real .exe extension indicating an executable file.

If you do run the attachment, you?ll see the promised presentation unaware that a Trojan called Troj/Bckdr-RFM is installed on your computer to let hackers see files on your computer or use it to run other programs (like sending spam or network attacks).

In short, be careful with any incoming email attachments and delete anything like this immediately.

Thanks GB, I never knew how the malware things worked. Which brings me to a question, which antivirus program out there gets all this stuff, or is there one. I go to the store and read the antivirus programs, and leave more confused than satisfied. Like firewall protection (Is the one with windows good enough), malware , spyware, anti-phishing. Could someone try to explain this stuff and how to protect ourselves from it.

                                                        Thanks Mark

The first thing to remember is if you don't recognize or know who sent the e-mail, delete it. That will save allot of problems.  :)

How to NOT hide the file extension @ Windows (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/security/trojanext.html)

Always a good solution to see what you've got in front of yours.

Thanks GB.  We run Norton, Crap Cleaner and Malwarebites.  I always make sure to run the crap cleaner and malwarebite in the registers also.  Takes care of everything.

She may be referring to a program called "CCleaner" but with Cherie I wouldn't bet my last dollar on it!

Yes, Crap Cleaner is the "long name" for CCleaner.
This is the company producing the ccleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

be aware of the sponsorship during installation (Google toolbar...).

it's a good program, cleaning the temp files (ALL the temp files) and also cleaning the registry (some kind of index which your computer does read in all the time). Can be run automatically. Doesn't harm your PC.

Piriform also has a pretty neat defragmenting tool called defraggler...

RE: "DeFraggler"....

I was told that the derfragging step is not necessary in Win 7.

Is that a correct statement?

I do it frequently in my XP Pro machine as well as cleaning the registry.

WIN7 is self defragmenting - if set so. There is a process for this.
