Message I just had Pop Up!

I just had this message pop up in the screen....

Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Might be an indicator of the 'speed' problem.

I'm not a database specialist myself, but working in the ICT business I know that databases will need heavy maintenance.
It's possible the problem is in the database.
I don't know what kind of Database Steve uses, but i know that there can be problems due to the number of connections to the server or the actual threads on the server where the database is running on.

small example:
If you have "notification on" for a topic then every reply on that topic will produce an email to all the people who want to be notified. this wil produce hundreds of emails. this will effect the performance of the server.

but then again the problem could be an other 1000 things.
looking at the number of 1156 users, the impact of the "havy users", all the topcis, reply's and posted attachements I think this database is growing to a "proffesional" size.

I reccon that a medium/big size company has employed a fulltime database programer who will have his hands full of this kind of database.
this forum is free, so lets give steve some time to solve the job, believe me, this can be a difficult problem!

I feel somewhat responsible for the posting of the Slowness of the response time.
My initial thought was that as one who is constantly 'tinkering' with my system that I had personally done something that was slowing things down.

I certainly don't think Steve is remiss or lacking in his administration of the group but it does seem that there is a 'problem' somewhere along the line  and the logical place would be with the 'server' since it is an intermittent thing and is experienced by most users.

I, too, am 'computer' knowledgeable enough to know the 'problem' can be a very difficult one to pinpoint and solve.

With the comments that have been posted I seriously doubt that anyone is going to drop out of this group just because it slows down from time to time.

We all appreciate that Steve has done a great job of setting up this 'forum' and we have to realize that he also does have a LIFE to live on his own and cannot be a perpetual servant to the members of the group!

Anyone who uses a Scroll Saw must be 'patient by nature' so we will roll with the situation and be eternally happy that we have this source of information, friendship and knowledge of our 'craft'.

A REMINDER!!!
This and Steve's blog are financed by Steve and through DONATIONS!!!
Have you made a donation lately?!?!?!?!?

I was just explaning this because i saw that there ar many topics spread over more than one category.
I assumed that not everyone knows the same about computers, so I wrote it down hoping it brought some understanding.
And yes you are right that scrollers are patient by nature 8)
so no offense GB, my comment wasn't personal to you or anyone else.

and: ....
yes, sir! ;)

Marcel! No Offense Taken!

I was just letting the members and especially Steve know that I was NOT complaining but looking for answers to the slow traffic on my machine. Once I determined it was not just my computer I knew that there was a slowdown somewhere and most likely it was with the server. I also know that this happens and often corrects itself.

So let's all just keep on doing our thing and let the problem be solved when it can be.
