General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Blade sliping
« on: March 31, 2015, 04:14:31 pm »

are the two faces of the screw and other side flush? the screw itself might have worn as well. Check that both faces are flush and parallel. Another possibility is that the "left" face has backed out. Make certain it reaches to the center of the slot.

relax your hands and let the saw do its work. I'll bet you are forcing the wood into the direction you want it to go and that pushes the blade in weird directions. In particular the spiral blades will do that 'cause they cut in all directions.

If you can scan the photo just copy/paste it into a word processor ( Like Ms Word or Wordperfect) and drag the handles to resize.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Help me with Finishes
« on: January 04, 2015, 03:34:17 pm »

Are you using gloss lacquer? Deft is usually very shiny. You may need two or more coats to build up the finish. Lacquer is very forgiving since the coats will "burn" into the lower coats and give an easy finish.

If you are spraying lacquer you don't need to sand since it will "burn" into the previous coat. That is one of its advantages. If you do lightly hit the surface the final finish does tend to be smoother. Enamal and acrylics don't work the same.

How about "masonite" pretty tough stuff as I remember. Or maybe some sort of "bakelite" material.

O.K. try putting a screw driver or knife blade under the knob and gently pry it up. You should b able to turn the shaft easily with your fingers. Maybe the inside of the knob has been rounded off, The shaft has a flat that the knob should turn by friction.

I'm certain you have checked but is the knob firmly attached to the shaft? There is a screw that attaches the knob to the shaft. If it is loose the knob will turn but the control will not move.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Fonts for name plate

Go to fonts 101.com and select a sans serif (no feet) type font. If you change your letters to Small Caps you wont have a problem with the descenders I don't believe.

Steve, I don't see how you can have a day job and do what you do with the saw. Suggestion. you did a cat plaque about what meow you don't understand. I have been trying to modify your "Woof" plaque to include what part of woof don't you understand but have not had much luck. You might try that one for us... thanks for your efforts. I'm new to this hobby and having a ball.  Darryl
